(Reuters) - A new computer worm emerged on Tuesday which broke the speed record from the announcement of a security vulnerability in Microsoft's Internet Explorer to a full-blown virus that spreads in the wild....Microsoft said the worm is a variant of MyDoom and that it was investigating the threat the worm poses..."People will receive an e-mail saying that their PayPal account has been credited or that they are invited to watch a webcam. When they click on the link, just by viewing a site it executes code and infects the computer."...Microsoft was expected to issue its monthly batch of security patches later on Tuesday, but the company could not immediately say if a patch for the new worm would be part of it.

So, don't go clicking any email from Paypal saying, that your account had been credited $175.

MS patches for this week have been announced and there's nothing about this. Just an ISA Server patch.

Hey, I got that e-mail about the credit to my paypal account. I know that i deleted it, but i don't reemember if I opened it first!!!! I'm not as computer savvy as some of you are, so I have to ask you something........ if I did open it before I deleted it, and it infected my PC wouldn't that be obvious right away? What I mean is there's no possibility that the virus could be in my PC right now, is there? Because my PC is working fine.

BGM -

Don't think so. It takes time for those things to load even on fast connections, and that's assuming that it immediately took you to a website, one that had a virus that would automatically download to your PC. Most PCs would give you a "do you want to download this program" dialogue box first.

Yer probably fine. I know hackers are wizards, but I'm skeptical this virus can get you that fast with so little effort on your part.

That's because nobody uses Macs. Remember, hackers are after the majority of internet users, not the small minority.

I had to take my laptop to the shop for this worm the very day you posted this. It's a fast spreader folks, and a tough one to get rid of.

Instead of taking it somewhere to be fixed, couldn't you just have formatted the harddrive, which would erase everything on your PC, and start over by reloading the O.S again? (ofcourse, that's assuming that you have the software for the full version of your O.S. rather than just an upgrade version).

It's easier just to clean them off, but it helps if you discover them EARLY like I did. If your computer starts slowing down significantly for no apparent reason, you've probably got a problem. Get it fixed soon or formatting your hard drive may turn out to be your only option.
