Correct me on this if neccessary, but I think that this Z06 will be out in 06. And the real big story is the new LS7 engine that it will have under the hood which according to Bob Lutz (GM Vice Chairman) will have 500 hp.

500 rwhp to the crank....400 to the wheels...

About the same as a S/C Marauder! :D

Only a few thousand pounds lighter...

According to what I have read, it should be about 1100 lbs lighter than an MM. My C5 Vette (2000) is about 3350 lbs. C6 Z06 should come in about 3150 to 3200. If I remember, our MMs are about 4300 curb weight.

If the C6 Z06 puts out 500 at the crank, then that should translate into about 430hp at the rear (about 14% loss with 6 spd, vs. 18-20% loss with an Auto.).

 I am on the vetteforum as much as I am here, and somehow this is the first time I have seen this picture. I was hoping the next Z06 would be a dissapointment, so I would not be tempted to buy it to keep my 2001 company.

But if this pic is the real deal and includes 500hp 427 under the hood I'm afraid I won't be able to resist. :(

Man, I really appreciate vettes and really dig the mid years, but never really wanted one that bad. I've been thinking in the future I'd get a used Viper or a new Mustang Cobra but this would definately be on the list. Man this is a mean looking car.

Why couldn't I just like macramé / origami / paper maché or something cheap? No sir, its gotta be blown slammed Marauders or nutty Vettes. Yeesh.

Look at the size of those rear wheels and tires. Sweeeeeet! 500 hp has become the new goal for all supercars now.

The quote that i read from Bob Lutz at GM states that it will be a 500HP small Block engine, so whether it's a 427 cubed engine or an upgraded version of the current 6.0 vette motor (364 cubes I believe) it will be an aluminum small block, and the car will be very light as Logan and others have accurately pointed out. So we're talkling about a low 11 second car here, and probably a high 10 second one IF someone puts headers and gears in it. Yes, I think this would be in the territory of the "secret project" car.

Think about it....the last Z06 Vette reportedly ran 12.3 ET's, and that was with 405 HP at the crank and is heavier than the new Z06 will be. So I'm sure that w/an additional 100 HP and being quite a bit lighter, this upcoming 06 Z06 Vette will easily be a full second faster in the quartermile with some good drag radials on the back. And with slicks probably in the high 10's. The question is, will they allow this car to run at the track in the low 11's or possibly high 10's w/out having a roll bar? Anyhow, as much as I'm impressed w/the alleged power this car will have, I'm still not crazy about the bodystyle. Infact, I still think the four door Marauder looks better.

Billy,

I do not anticipate the new Z06 to be lighter than the current one. My 2001 weighs in at 3115lbs, and the 2006 is rumored to be 3130lbs. A regular C5 weighs over 3200lbs, and the C6 is a tad lighter.

There are people who have gotten the current Z06 in stock form into the high 11s, but most are in the low 12s. With plenty of room for a big tire in the back and 500hp, I would expect low 11s would not be a problem. There are strong rumors pointing the 7.0L displacement, and some more saying it will be 6.4L. I am hoping for the former.

Looks are subjective. I have never once thought to compare the looks of my Corvette and my Marauder (or any sports car and a sedan) as they both appeal to me in totally different ways.

Gee, and here I am still dreaming of someday owning a pre-'68 Vette...

There aren't very many new cars that are made that I think have a great looking bodystlye. It isn't like the 60's when there were many cars w/nice bodystyles IMO. that's what I meant about the new vette. i think the car actually looked better when the ZR-1 came out in the early 90's. And the Marauder is one of the few late model cars IMO that looks good. But that's my opinion.
