Just under the steering column on my '03 MM is a molded plastic section about 12" by 18" or so, where your knees are supposed to go under when sitting. Between this section and the upper plastic section that goes over the steering column are 4 pieces of thin blue stiff plastic tape. Has anyone else seen these? I actually found mine by feel, as one section of tape was protruding and I felt it when holding my left hand down by my left knee. Two pieces of tape are in the left / right corners, and two next to them on each side.
Were these supposed to be removed prior to the install of the lower plastic molding, or do they serve some other purpose? They probably could be removed with a thin knife without doing any damage, as they look a bit sloppy, but thought I would ask first.
Just interested if anyone else has noticed this?
Thanks as always!
Norm

That is known as "Squeak-Tape" or "3M Squeak Reduction Tape"
Leave it there. You can trim it back if it bothers you but don't remove it at the contact point.
I've seen Mercedes and BMW's are loaded with this everywhere. You don't see it so much on domestics.

Dan, if that stuff really works, maybe Barry and me can use it on some of our joints!

He he .....I should have saved them for our 'limbs'.
Seriously though, those pieces are glued, and in my case a few came loose and were very apparent between the the trim pieces. When I pulled out the kick plate under the steering wheel to install my line loc switch I could clearly see a half dozen or so of these dampening tapes. I moved a few back into position, and out of my eyesite, before I reinstalled the lower dash trim plates.
And BTW: I never knew what that tape was until this thread.:P

Should have known someone on this forum would know the answer! Thought this one might stump everyone. This never occurred too me but makes perfect sense. Thanks Dan! I will trim off the 1/16th sticking out with an exacto knife, but will leave the rest alone.

Norm
