One of my co-workers of Italian background nearly died of laughter when he spotted this CD in my GTA sometime back in the mid 90s or so...
Tocattas is "touches (n)" in Italian. Orgue is "organ" in French, and Grandes means "great" or "big" in French. Read the title of the CD and you'll see why the translation is a hoot.

It does, actually, but unfortunately not my favourite rendition of it. The version that actually blew my mind was a recording made at the Cathedral of Freiburg in Germany in 1973 or thereabouts, played by E. Power Biggs... this cathedral has 4 organs that can simultaneously be controlled from a central console in varying configurations, or played individually.

I stumbled across this recording on vinyl in the summer of 1991 while on one of my weekly used-record hunts (I budgeted 4-5 albums per week, hence my current 2500+ lp collection). The reverb time is awesome in that cathedral (6 seconds?), and I believe this recording was done in quad (although I've never actually heard it that way, but I am currently working on a s/w quad decoder that I will finish someday provided I can find DirectX documentation that will actually solve my current problem!).

I had a homemade subwoofer setup in my bedroom when I lived with my parents that used my clothes closet as an enclosure that I calculated to resonate at 26 Hz... this particular LP was absolute KILLER even at low levels. You felt like those pipes were right there beside you, awesome presence added to a performance that I think was already out of this world.

What I like most about this particular performance is Bigg's timing (he doesn't flip up and down in tempo like most organ players, but rather keeps a beautiful perfect tempo per passage, matching the mood of the portion). He also rips off these AWESOME massive multi-note / multi-organ chords that really moves a person, and they're captured so cleanly and perfectly in this recording, God bless the sound techs. The finale of the first portion (tocatta) is absolutely mind-blowing in its intensity and power.

My brother says he used to hear me coming down our street from 3-4 blocks away with this performance cranked way up in my GTA, with the windows all the way up to boot, as I'd come home from work at some ungodly 3am+ hour.

I searched for years for a CD version of it with no success... until a chance venture into a CD shop in a North Dallas mall (Galleria?) sometime in 2001. With all this reminiscing of this awesome recording, I think I'll dig it out for tomorrow's drive to work....

I see now that they've rereleased it on SACD format... there is a sound bite available, but unfortunately they trimmed it just as Biggs was about to hit one of those chords (albeit not anywhere close to the best ones on that passage).

Did they have Dolby Surround in 1973? I thought they introduced it in 1982.

In any case, I don't even know what technique they used to encode this particular performance (SQ? QS? CD-4?) in 1973 or thereabouts. But what I am working on is a small s/w module that will extract rear channels from regular stereo material. I know such gadgets exist already in small home stereo systems (with their small surround speakers) but my 2 channel prototype sounds better than the gadget in my Sony mini-system. And with a few math changes in the processing formulae, I've succeeded in placing guitars and vocals in a 360 sound plane from regular stereo material, but playing back only through 2 channels at a time for now. (the only anomaly is that on many rock songs, it sounds as if you are standing right in the middle of the drum kit, with the different drums surrounding you. Kind of unique to listen to, I need to tweak it just right).

But the big road block is getting my Direct X applets to properly feed audio processed by my application at the right sampling rate and properly positioned in the 3d sound field. Right now it's misbehaving something badly, even though I've coded it as properly as I think I could have. *shrug* Sad part is, I've spent a good deal of money on DirectSound programming books but they all seem to focus on game sound, which relies on pre-recorded bits of sound, not a continuous stream of processed multi-channel sounds.


I know it'll sound awesome... I threw together a quick prototype of this setup back in 1989, using a small analog circuit that does what my C++ application is doing connected to 2 portable stereos (ghetto blasters, as they were called). Playing back "The Wall" was an awe-inspiring experience... there's a few sequences with planes that sounded as if they were travelling over your head from front to rear! And a second before "Mother" starts, there's the sound of someone exhaling in sad frustration in one channel... with my processing, it sounded as if the guy was breathing right into your ear! It was so eerie. Can't wait to try extracting fake rear channels from other albums...

Dolby Noise Reduction Technologies has been around since the early 60s.
Their Dolby Stereo Technology started sometime in the 70s but I don't know exactly when.
I have asked Dolby for a Technical Timeline for their technologies so we can both see when they were invented and implemented.
I remember my father having a quadrophonic record that played a single instrument in each of the 4 speakers he had on his stereo.
I have to look to see if I have this record in my collection.
I'll let you know if it plays the same way on my 5.1 audio system.

Thanks, Mary... I knew there was a reason I had 1982 in my head as the arrival of Dolby Surround.

All this talk of quad and surround has me all fired up to resume work on this gizmo of mine once again... Maybe this weekend (as I'll be sitting in a Tulsa hotel room) I can resume scouring the internet for more hints as to what I'm doing wrong in my real-time sound stream positioner portion of my application.
