I remember vividly that day in January '86 when the Challenger exploded during launch...I had been watching it live at the office and heard Mission Control say: "We've lost the downlink..." my first thought was: "that's not good..."
I had a full stack of work-orders to complete and I was riding around in the truck in a daze, listening to the radio...every house I visited, people were crowded around the TV...
Here we are again...

Like RF, my thought immediately returned to the Challenger tragedy. The loss of these heroes is unfathomable. God bless them, their families and their friends.
God bless America!

I'm amazed NOBODY on the ground was hit by debris.
It must of been raining metal, hell the shuttle must have 100,000 heat tiles at least and those things don't burn.
Sounds like the left wing failed.

First, like everybody else, I feel really badly for the astronauts and their families.
On a different angle, though, I wonder about the viability of the shuttle program now that we're down to three vehicles. I wonder if we can maintain our aggressive station building schedule with this small of a fleet. Anybody heard anything about plans to buy another shuttle?

There are no plans to build another shuttle. The most recent shuttle, The Endeavor was largely built from parts left over that were originally designed to be replacement parts.
There is no doubt that the schedule will be affected. For now we will be depending more upon the Russian delivery system. Unfortunatly the Russian's system is only capable of delivering around 5 tons of payload when the shuttle can handle up to 110 tons.
It is hoped that the cause can be isolated fairly quickly and that it is determined that this accident is not a failure of any systems of the shuttle. It is hoped that it is in fact a manifistation of the inherent dangers of space flight.
That being the case we should be able to move forward with the shuttle program much sooner than the nearly three years that it took to recover from the Challenger tragedy.
