Well, Cleveland finally recieved our first snow last night.

A low pressure system moved across our area and caused a major lake effect snow storm last night.

Folks in cars and semi trucks were stuck on every road in the N.E. Ohio area. I couldn't even get out of my driveway as cars were stuck on the hill in front of my house. Freeways were closed for miles.

Jessica and I both have snow tires, and were able to make it some 15 miles to the train station to ride THE POLAR EXPRESS, all along passing cars littered on every road on the way there. Polar Express pics to follow.

We got 10 inches in my area, but 30 miles east, they got 16-26 inches over night.

I love it!!! Can't shovel it, but watching Gage and Leo play in the snow is priceless.

Hey Barry...it's still snowing over here. We got about the same as you did, but the wind off the lake blows it all inland. If you go two, or three streets south they've got between 8-10 inches of snow.

I'm going to run outside and snap some pictures really quick!

That is pretty. While I don't care for the bitter cold and high winds, I don't mind the snow. So far in Iowa, we have had one light snow that left the roads kind of icy one morning, but that is it (knock on wood). It seems like any more, the snow falls more in January, February, and March here in Iowa...

I happen to live right on the shore of Lake Erie. I live 7 miles west of downtown Cleveland, right on the coast. My view faces east, and living here definitely makes for interesting weather. It ranges from howling unabated wind, to lake effect snow, water spouts, and intensified thunderstorms. Normally you can see the city, plain as day from my window, but it's been snowing since sunday night and is now obscured. Here are some pics taken about 20 minutes ago.

The wind has been sustained anywhere from 25-35kts, gusting over 50kts. As you can see, being right on the shoreline with wind like that doesn't allow for the accumulation that Barry has in his pictures. He's also got about 200-300 ft in elevation on me too, and that helps. About 3 streets south of here there's between 8-10 inches of snow. A friend of mine that lives in Ashtabula has over 2 feet in his backyard.

As much as I hate snow, there is something about the new neighborhood I'm in that gives it that idyllic look... just 50 minutes drive southward at my parent's place, it hasn't piled up nearly as deep as at my place.

There isn't a whole lot of snow here. What fell in October melted in November, and the little that fallen this month is melting pretty fast. No pics but I've got a pretty good journal a friend sent to me: :)

A SNOW DIARY

DECEMBER 4 - 5:00 PM
It started to snow. The first of the season and the wife and I took our hot buttered rum and sat by the window watching the soft flakes drift down, clinging to the trees and covering the ground. It was beautiful.

DECEMBER 9 -
We woke to a big beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering the landscape. What a fantastic sight. Every tree and shrub was covered with a beautiful mantle of white. I shoveled snow for the first time in years and loved it. I did both our drive and sidewalk. Later, the snow-plough came along and covered up our driveway with compacted snow from the street. He smiled and I waved back. I shoveled it again.

DECEMBER 13 -
The sun has melted most of our lovely snow. Oh well, I'm sure we'll get more before this lovely winter is through.

DECEMBER 14 -
It snowed 8 inches last night and the temperature dropped to about 0. I shoveled the driveway again. Shortly, the snow-plough came by and did his trick again.

DECEMBER 15 -
Sold our car and bought a 4x4 Blazer so we could get around in the snow. Bought snow tires for the pick-up.

DECEMBER 18 -
Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway. $139.00 to the chiropractor, but nothing broken, thank God. The damn sky is getting dark again.

DECEMBER 19 -
Still cold, icy roads, making for tough driving. Slid into a guard rail with my wife's car. Probably $2,000 damage or more. She's really pissed off.

DECEMBER 20 -
Had another 14 inches of the white **** last night. More shoveling in store for me today. That damn snow plough came by twice.

DECEMBER 22 -
We are assured of a white Christmas, because another 7 inches of that white **** fell today and with this freezing weather, it won't melt until August. I got all dressed up to go out and shovel that **** again (boots, jumpsuit, jacket, scarf, earmuffs, gloves, etc.) - then I got the urge to pee.

DECEMBER 24 -
If I ever catch that son of a ***** that drives the snow-plough, I'll drag him through the snow by his balls. I think he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then comes down the street 100 miles an hour and throws white **** everywhere.

DECEMBER 25 -
MERRY CHRISTMAS. They predict 12 more inches of the f---ing white **** tonight. Does anyone know how many damn shovelfuls of snow 12 inches is? To hell with Santa, he doesn't have to shovel this ****.
The snowplow came by for a donation. I hit him with my ice axe. The doctors think he'll live.

DECEMBER 28 -
We got 11 more inches. I must be going snow blind or have a severe case of depression, because the wife is beginning to look good to me.

DECEMBER 29 -
The toilet froze and the roof is starting to cave in. If you go outside, don't eat the brown snow.

DECEMBER 30 -
I torched the house and moved to Costa Rica.

Another major snow event predicted for N.E. Ohio tomorrow, Sunday, into Monday.

If the wind comes over the lake correctly, we're in for a foot in my area and another two in our snow belt area.

Classic lake effect snow, averaging 1/2 inch per hour at this point with 5 new inches at the moment.
Wonderfull to look at, but advisories are saying to stay home.

Man we got clobbered again. Barry...I think your area actually picked up more than most this time around. Certian eastside locations got over a foot yesterday. The most we got here on the lakshore was 6". I would have taken pictures but there wasn't anything to see...no sun, no clouds, it was a white out all day. The 30kt winds were really howling, and that blast of 10 degree air really put a freeze on things. We're driving to Buffalo today as well for pre-Christmas activities. Should be fun!

All the pics I posted were in auto and had to be tweaked to look the way my eys saw them.
I just practiced with P MODE and set the exposure to -4ev and the color temp to 5200k hoping this would correct the snow pics being everything is so bright and white.

Not shooting in RAW format yet. Using the next below; JPEG FINE 3008x2000 = 2.9Mb file size.

I fussed with ISO settings earlier in the day, but not in P MODE. I discovered that the overall colors in the pictures were darker with higher ISO settings which are manually settable from 200 thru 1600.

I forgot to experiment with different settings on the above shot, and it was defaulted at 200 as my current settings for ISO AUTO are OFF. I can manually change it prior to shot, but due to inexperience, I do not know what to change it to.
I can change ISO AUTO to ON, but I am then required to also set a SHUTTER SPEED LIMIT (1/125 to 30S) and I have no clue what to choose. The default appears to be 1/30. :confused:

It has snowed since about 6 a.m. Wednesday morning, at times over an inch an hour. By this morning we had recieved anywhere from 18-26 inches in my area. A record for this date. Promptly at 4:15 a.m. it stopped. And at 5:15 a.m. this morning, it was raining....not just raining, but friggin pouring. At 8:15 the temp abruptly dropped again and it started snowing again. Covering a lovely coat of ice above the snow, and saturating the snow so much that even the largest plows were having extreme difficulty pushing more than 20-30 feet at a time.

My house is litterally snowed in, as the hieght of the snow is at bumper level on all of our cars, and being so wet, nothing is moving. I can't shovel this stuff with my shoulder, so we are in until....well, I am not sure...I guess until I run out of booze and cigars. Actually my meds need refilled, and Jessica has run out of flour and butter.

I will shovel two tracks, and hope the Vic can get turned around and plow through this mess.

I don't know about you...but it's pictures like that...that make me absolutely love being a Clevelander. I love this city. It's absolutely amazing, and it's weather is quite a spectacle to behold. I was inbound this morning on I-90 from Buffalo. I hit the rain / snow line at the OH / PA border...it was like driving into a wall of white. Simply amazing. I actually think some points south west of Cleveland could have picked up close to 30" of snow. Just immagine if that pouring rain this morning would have been all snow!! We would have been burried! I love the snow! Glad we'll have a white Christmas!

I am surprised you don't use a tripod. Any shot more than 5 seconds open, my body, braced or not, won't hold still enough.

Was your sky that light in color to your eye as well? Appears abnormally light for 1:30 a.m. :confused: You seem to be going against what the manual says....to use a higher ISO setting for darker situations....explain more please....

Our skys around here are much darker to the south, and with Cleveland 18 miles to the north, they are very bright in that direction.

BTW: Open your window next time, (I hate the glass glare) that's how I get alot of those bird shots w/o freezing my azz off outside.

The last heavy snow produced tree results I haven't seen in years. Pine trees are very resiliant. and with their unique shape, rearely fall prey to heavy ice and snow. Nearly half of the pines in my area look like the following picture.

These ducks were at the pond. I heat our pond in the winter so I don't have to chip the ice for the fish to get ample air supply.

This pic was the best of nearly 15 attempts. I had to take the shot from over 50 meters aways so as to not annoy the lead male of the bunch. With the light color of the subjects, and the snow, combined with using a 200mm lense, I had a hell of a time getting the exposure right as I have not mastered shots with lenses over 70mm yet. This I need some serious help with.

I caught this little critter nodding off after a full belly of sunflower. This is a common Red Squirrel. Unlike the common Brown variety, these fellows are a miniature variety and never get bigger than a small kitten. They are arch enemys of the brown and do not socialize with them either. They remind me of overgrown shipmunks.

This was the only shot I got off as they are extremely shy, and the focus on object was difficult from the distance I was. I'll try again later today, as I filled his jar with sunflower...he'll be back.

Care to hear how much I spent this past week having a family of 5 of these little MF'er's removed from my house? Or how much I am spending to get their access points sealed up? To make matters worse, one is still trapped in my roof and the trapper will be back tomorrow to remove his sorry arse also.

As you guys know, I am an animal lover, but these guys are rodents and cost me a boat load of dough over the ten year period that I have owned my house. They just keep coming back! :mad:

As much as I love the wildlife in my backyard, the four varmits that aggrivate me to the point of eradication are the ground hog, the brown squirrel, the racoon and the deer.The ground hogs have collapsed my front porch, and stoop, and shed with their humungous underground dens. I have since eradicated ALL of them. The racoon, big mess makers, and dangerous. Ongoing fight with them. The deer...screw them, I have beat my brains out trying to keep them off my property...I give up.

The squirrel however....librarys of books have been written on squirrels. Particularly the destructive Brown ones. But ALL varietys will take advantage of an ingress into a human's home. The easiest solution, once you have had them removed....and they WILL come back...is to make sure there there are no tree branches within 12 feet of your house. This may be a difficult task, but it is the solution. They will also climb gutters to gain access, but there is a solution there as well....cooking oil or grease at 3 feet above ground level.

My biggest problem is destruction to my very ubundant, expensive bird feeders. Only the browns do this work. The Red ones and chipmunks are smart enough to know that if the feeder is empty, it's empty!!!, and not an invitation to chew through the entire thing to get at one friggin seed.

You're right though, they quickly learn what a trap is and avoid them, shooting is the easiest option. If I lived closer, I could share a vast amount of trade secrets to squirrel eradication. It's almost a sport these days!!!:rolleyes:

Marty is correct, reds are nothing but rats with a bushy tail. Hence why we call them tree rats. In NYS they are classified as a varmint, vermon is a better description. They make for good target practice...

I gave up on the deer also. I just planted different bushes that they find less tasty. That and a fair amount of poops from Stanley and Stella keep them away.

The squirrels are so damn destructive and refuse to stay away. I "topped" 20 feet off of a tree this week which should help, but my house is surrounded by trees and I simply can not remove them all.

Did I mention that these little buggers climb buildings better than Spiderman?

Dug myself out of a snow bank on Saturday night ...
As much as I hate snow, there is something about the new neighborhood I'm in that gives it that idyllic look... just 50 minutes drive southward at my parent's place, it hasn't piled up nearly as deep as at my place.

Used to live in Montreal. Boy am I glad I don't have to deal with too much snow anymore! Although we're in the middle of an ice storm right now in Kansas City with 1½ inches of ice expected by tomorrow 6:00PM CST. :bigcry:

I lost my favorite Sumac in the back near the fire pit. It did not snap off, it uprooted insted, and took my homemade porta potty with it.:( I really liked that tree....

Very nice shots. :up: I hate loosing trees. We had a snow storm on Thanksgiving day and I nearly lost a few. Th snow was very wet and leaves were still on the trees.

I went out this morning for a stroll (2 degrees without the wind). I heard the trees cracking as well. The sun was shining bright. There is a certain beauty and sense of calmness after an ice storm. Thankfully not too much damage in my neighbourhood other than a few trees being bruised. We did have a combined 90,000 households without power. Hopefully for them it will all be back on today.

Lots of climate changes happening lately... might not be an evident global warming per se, but there's definitely a global something happening lately.
The picture you took looks really nice. Looks like it should be on some Hallmark card! ;) I changed my desktop to black and set the picture as my wallpaper and turned off the lights in my office. It really looks pretty dang cool if you asked me.

As for climate changes I share your thoughts. I lived in St. Sauveurs (North of Montreal, but you probably know that already) for some 20 years. Growing up there, we could always expect to start skiing in December at least by the time school let out when I was a kid. As the years progressed however, we found ourselves having all hills opened later and later in the year. Just look at this year alone in North America: Snow in Mexico, deluge on the West Coast, frost in Florida, snow in Las Vegas, ice storms in the Midwest and east coast, Hurricane back-to-back, it's crazy. Something is definately running amuck! Just got back from Omaha, NE this evening. We were caught in freezing rain between Omaha and Kansas City. Crazy stuff!

Can't help but to think about the movie "The Day after Tomorrow" during these times!

You definately need the flexbility of the D70. ISO can be manually set in 50 increments from 100 to1600.

We don't get clear nights like that, it's cloudy around here for nearly 4 months. I will try as well when the opportunity arrises. I want to do a moon shot with the 500mm as well.

I think the biggest issue right now is poor quality (older) lenses on a high end camera. No hurry to replace now, I will do so next year in St. Thomas USVI.

The other problem is that I haven't learned what/how mode to use to set my own f-stops nor aperatures yet. I either shoot full automatic, or in P-mode where I only fuss with ISO, white balance, and exposure times. I'll learn soon enough. Gonna take the D70 class in the spring.

I took a ton of bike pics in different modes, but my manual settings that were good from our seats, smeared really bad when I got closer to the bikes. I tried all of the auto settings during their show hoping to get one right before they finished.

I found that the cameras auto setting for taking 'portraits' worked the best to slow the bikes down sacrafising some color/brightness. I also was practicing my panning motion...never did that before, and it worked out nice.

I am not sure why the camera only spits out part of the EXIF info, as if I look at the image with the camera, it shows me two other pages of information.????

All of the truck shots were manually set by me to ISO 1000. I couldn't really see a difference at 1600, so I kept them at 1000. The bikes, being in a auto mode, were likely all 200-400 ISO. I already deleted the images from the camera, so it's too late to check back.

OK, so there is absolutely no way that I can compare to the 19 inch dumping that Barry got at his house a while back. But, the 2 inch snowfall that hit the DC area yesterday absolutely crippled this region. Unbelievable !!! :rolleyes: Took me 2.5 hours to make the normal 30 minute trip home from work. Vans, SUVs, and cars in ditches. Accidents galore. No problem in the Marauder.

2nd photo is on the same hallway, but facing south-ish. This is the northernmost edge of the historic old Montreal touristy area. Visible is the Notre Dame Cathedral (bluish stained glass windows) dwarfed by some ominous huge building.

I've been trying to get pics of Elvira being covered in a time lapse fashion. It just hasn't snowed like it used to the last couple years! Barely 6 inches before it gets warm and melts :alone: .
