I have searched the forum quite a bit and found a lot of answers on this issue, but had a couple of questions that were not covered.

If I am driving fast around town I keep the OD OFF, up until I hit a steady 50 or 60 or so, and then it goes ON; likewise when going WOT on a freeway on ramp, getting quickly up to speed, etc. However, once I'm on the highway and up to speed I switch the OD back ON for best mileage.

So obviously I am assuming it is safe to switch the OD ON at freeway speeds. But what if I am doing 75 with OD ON and want to floor it to really get around someone? Is it safe to switch to OD OFF while at an already high speed before punching it, or should I just forget about it and floor it with the OD ON?

I always ignored OD in my wifes Toyota and drove with it ON for years, but did not drive that car like I do my MM, for obvious reasons!

It seems like I'm constantly turning it off and on, but want to make sure I am not hurting the tranny.

Thanks as always!

Norm

What you are doing is fine and switching OD off before punching it avoids the dreaded 4th to 2nd down shift.
That one gear change seems to be the one the 4R70W is not found of.

Yeah, what he ^^^^ said!
I shut mine off just before dropping the hamer if I feel the need to punch it @ highway speed!

Good timing on this thread. I also had questions on this OD tactic. Seems to hurt mileage a bit.
But oh how much better the MM drives makes it worth the extra chump change in petrol. :D

Mike.

Got it! Thanks for the feedback and to everyone else who responded. I agree it does hurt mileage a bit to drive it more with OD OFF, but it sure is a lot more fun!

Thanks,
