Cyclone Spoilers

I know it may be a bit off topic, but does anyone here have a 70 or 71 Cyclone Spoiler? I am trying to weasle one out of a family member as we speak, and would like to talk to a current owner.

Is there a specific quesrion you're trying to answer? The 70 and 71 cars were very similar, mostly some minor trim changes. A good friend of mine had a 71 Cyclone GT many years ago, if you have a question, I can pass it along to him to try get an answer.

In high school back in 73 we BS'ed a used car dealer to let us "test drive", unescorted no less, a white Cyclone Spoiler (71 maybe?), 429, four-speed. Until I bought my 04 GTO last year that was the fastest damn car I ever drove! Scared the crap out of me, I loved it. I read in Chiltons it was something like 365 hp at 10:1 compression or something like that. Ive always loved 68-74 Cyclones and Montego GTs (not as fast but looked even cooler, Mario drives on in the Speed Merchants.) :)

Danny Boone, a Master Tech at Collins L-M in Indy has an awesome 70 Cyclone Spoiler, he keeps a picture of it in his tool box. He did a really nice job with some little details and did a great job on the install of my METCO Watts Link while my MM was at MV II last summer. Call Collins and talk to him. Always liked those Cyclones, especially the 1969 CJ428 fastback in Orange.

70's were a lot different, but still stand-out vehicles.

The nice thing is that when you drove a Cyclone (I had a 68 GT fastback), you didn't see yourself coming and going like you did with a lot of other intermediate performance cars in those days.

While working at a Ford Parts Depot in 1969 (New Jersey), Mercury parked 50 new Cyclone fastbacks (25 orange/25 yellow) in the company parking lot, and then drove them in a caravan over to New York's Madison Square Garden as a publicity stunt.

Mercury was sponsoring the NewYork Knicks at that time.

No questions in particular. The one I am looking at is a 1970 429/C6 orange on black. It has been garage kept for the last 25 years. It has right around 25K miles on it. The only damage is two dent where the spoiler mounts due to someone using the spoiler as a handle to push the deck lid down.

I saw a similar car for sale about three years ago at a street car show in Manchester, NH. It was a standard shift car. Owner wanted 14K. Gorgeous vehicle.

If I didn't already have two old cars, and if I weren't in Manchester on a business trip and had to catch a plane out of Boston in just a few hours, I just might have given it a serious, serious look.

I've got a 70 Cyclone GT that my wife has been trying to get me to sell. I have a lot of my heart and soul in that car! I haven't accpeted the idea of selling it yet. It is in decent shape, but needs a full restoration. It has a 351-C with the closed chamber 4 bbl heads. The motor was rebuilt by Scott Shafiroff and should have a healthy 400 hp. He custom ground a Comp Cams camshaft with I bleieve 309 degrees duration, and 560 lift and it is hydraulic. The tranny was done as well. The engine compartment has been painted. The interior is out of it and stored away. The body needs to be painted, and the engine and tranny installed. But since I don't have a real garage, I have no place to work on it. It is in my backyard inside a canopy inclosure.
My younger brother also has a 70 GT that was mine. It too has a 351-C with a mild rebuild. His car is painted and looks nice. He wants to redo the interior in his. I took his for a ride around the neigborhood last week. What a blast!!

I was nearly an owner of a new 1970 Cyclone Spoiler...............the draft lottery pulled my birthday. I was number 13..............so, I enlisted in the Army and never did get the Cyclone. Van Dahm Lincoln - Mercury in Oak Lawn had it and a blue Cougar Eliminator. My Dad would have had to sign for me, he said get the Cyclone...............why? Because he couldn't see the spark plugs on the 428 Cobra Jet and he could see them on the 429 C.J. in the Cyclone. I'd still love a 1967 Cyclone GT or a Spoiler.
