I'm assembling an emergency kit for for each car in the family fleet. What do you think an emergency tool kit should contain. What tools? What parts? What other things? Duct tape is a given.

Dont forget a blanket.
Yep, blanket, first aid kit, QUALITY jumper cables - at least 8 ga. although I use 6 & 4 ga. (it's like a direct battery replacement) and make sure your jack & lug wrench are there & in good condition - upgrades to these two items can make your life easier & while you're at it throw in some work gloves, wheel chocks, tow strap, 4-in-1 or 6-in-1 screw driver, pliers, couple of adjustable wrenches and maybe a small socket/ratchet set. Extra fluids are good for a long trip!

FMC sells an emergency kit. Flares are most important. Always carried two cases in CVPI.

I wouldn't forget vise grips, channel locks and slip joint pliers and a good flashlight preferably two flashlights.

Flares, now there is a good question.

All I seen to be able to find for sale are the little 15min flares. I never see the long burning cop style anywhere.

Anybody seen tham at some sort of chain store?

Jay

Here's what I have so far:

Safety kit including:
Mil Spec first aid kit from Cheaper than Dirt
4 Triangle reflectors
Space blanket
Wool army blanket
Plastic flashlight (hand cranked rechargeable) with strobe
Vinyl gloves
disposeable rain poncho
2 sealed 1 liter water bottles

tools and parts:
Hose repair tape
Duct tape
30" 1/2" breaker bar with socket for lug nuts
Vice grips
Channel locks
Lineman's pliers
Longnose pliers
Cheapo 3/8 socket set
tow strap
Jumper cables
extra serpantine belt
Set of fuses
Screw driver with interchangeable tips
2 foot long 4X4 for wheel chocks

I think that I'll store this all in two plastic ammo type boxes that seal real tight and maybe throw it all into a rubbermaid box.

You could use them for an emergency drive belt.

You need a quality fire extinguisher. I had a Mark IV catch on fire and the emergency kit fire extinguisher only spread the flames.

I sued Sears who sold the kit and they paid for part of the repairs.

While it was being tuned a freezer plug on teh carb popped off. The mechanic plugged it but did not mop up all the gas that accumulated under the intake manifold. When she reached operating temp she flamed up and melted the rubber plug he replaced the metal freezer plug with.

After the fire extinguisher expired I tried smoothering it with my blue jean jacket to no avail. Some teens in a p/u truck stopped with a 15lb fire ext and put it right out! :)
