Well, . .
Received a letter from Ford stating our 2004 Mountaineer has the wrong tranny fluid in it from the factory! :mad2:
Approx. 740,000 units are suffering from this (2004 models only?).
My wife scheduled an appointment this morning, waits 2 hours for them to tell her she has to come back as a solenoid has been damaged due to this fluid, and is currently on back-order. They wouldn't change the fluid then as they claim it would have to be changed again when she returns and the correct tranny fluid is in short supply?
OK. Drive it till the tranny takes a dump! Sure, Makes sense to me.

What did they do? Install Mercon III instead of V? Everwear makes an additive that can be mixed with Merc III that has all the friction modifiers that Mercon V has with no ill effects.....

Not sure. After a while, the tranny will make a loud noise when going from Park to Reverse accordding to Ford. My concern is, what damage has incurred during the 9500 miles thus far? The vehicle has a nice firm shift and always liked it. Don't know if this is normal or not. Hmmm.

I once changed the trans fluid in my 99 CVPI with Mercon III and drove it for about 2 mos before I realized what I had done. I then changed the fluid, complete, with draining the converter, and never had a problem with it......

That is typical Ford :bs: . They should have been prepared with the correct parts or if not, at least changed the trans fluid.

Ok this is what I've heard. First off it also involves Lincoln Ls's. Ford got a new vendor to make the solenoid packs. They made them out of a plastic that is incompatable with the fluid. The aditive is suppose to correct this problem. They still use Mercon V. Some of the solenoid packs are already failing. They have to be replaced but the vendor can't supply them fast enough. We are installing about 12 solenoids per week. The only way to get them is on an emergency order and it takes about a week to get them. I've not seen any transmissions fail due to this problem. The only thing it does is cause a hard shift into reverse and some other minor shift problems. I don't know when they will have an ample supply. It's been going on for some time now.

I just got 24 solenoids in that I had ordered for stock. Sounds like they got an ample supply. Ray

How can you tell if it's the wrong stuff? Is it an issue with the MM's or Aviators?:(

No MM's are involved. 2004 Aviators are.
