Production began on May 25, 1985 and ended Aug 22, 1997. During that 12 year run they produced 2,029,577 of 'em, all at the St. Louis plant. The 1990 AWD model was Motor Trend's Truck of the year. The ones that were involved in the ignition switch fires, and burned up were made prior to '93.

On April 25, 1996 Ford Motor Company announced the recall of approximately nine million cars, trucks and minivans that may be equipped with a faulty ignition switch that may be responsible for causing hundreds of fires. In no case has any death or serious injury resulted from these fires.

The recall covers 1988-93 models sold in both the U.S. and Canada that Ford says, "In a very small number of vehilces, the ignition switch could cause an internal short circuit, creating the potential for overheating, smoke and possibly fire in the steering column of the vehicle." The faulty ignitions switches can cause a short circuit that may lead to a fire whether the vehicle is turned on or off.

The following models are subject to the recall:

1988-89 Ford Crown Victoria
1988-90 Ford Escort
1988-92 Ford Mustang including some early 1993 models
1988-92 Ford Thunderbird including some early 1993 models
1988-92 Ford Tempo including some early 1993 models
1988-91 Ford Aerostar
1988-91 Ford Bronco
1988-91 Ford F-Series Pickup
1988-89 Lincoln Town Car
1988-92 Mercury Cougar including some early 1993 models
1988-92 Mercury Topaz including some early 1993 models

Gee, thanks Mike! I had a '92 Aerostar XLT extended - 97000 trouble free miles before trading it on a 2000 Mountaineer.

Thanks Mike for that bit of info, it is greatly appreicated...

I had a 1990 F-150 that was recalled for the ignition switch and I never had a problem with it before or after the recall. I took it in and they fixed it while I waited, no biggie.

It's hard to see a good man ignored :o

Thanks for your efforts! If Ford got back to basics they would realize that a huge share of the market wants the utility and durability of a vehicle like the Aerostar without being a gas guzzler(suv)The problem is that the aerostar was ugly,Ford did little in the bling department to keep it desireable.

The issue for us was Sunshine, and as you recall it was a June '93 build. We knew about the fires, and couldn't find out if the Mustang was gonna be on the recall list, which they finally published in '96. Meanwhile we were hearing more and more about the fires, and , in fact, one of my colleagues lost his Aerostar in the driveway during dinner one fine summer evening. Next day I was at the dealer's door demanding he replace the switch that very day, or confirm that Sunshine was NOT on the recall list.

An amusing aside was that they needed to keep the girl over night, and, of course inside; which meant that if the car burned up, so would the dealership. I learned, later, as a precaution, they disconnected the battery for her overnight stay. :sunshine:

Are you gonna start a Fordaerostar.net site now for Aerostar enthusiasts???

Certainly a lot tougher and better than the Windstar, with the exploding head gaskets.....I had a 98 Windstar that caught fire earlier in 2004, burned to the ground.....

I was working at a Ford dealer when that recall hit. Couldn't hand out those switches fast enough.
