View Full Version : 2nd Oil Change - Metal Filings

Folks,
I did a quick search and didn't find any comment so I'll ask.
Yesterday, I did my second oil change at 4915 miles (first done at 1000 miles) and noticed some small amount of tiny metal filings as I poured the last of my dirty oil into my save bucket. Is this normal for the engine break in even at the second oil change? Honestly, I don't know what was there at the first oil change. I neglected to pay close enough attention then. There might have been some then too - I don't know.
Both oil changes were with the standard Motorcraft 5W-20 oil.
I think this is okay but would like your opinions/experience.

My last oil change was at 18,000 miles and according to Blackstone Labs, the engine is STILL breaking in !!!
I've been usig Mobil1 0W-20 since 3,000 miles..
I now change the oil every 5,000 miles.

My last Blackstone analysis (at 25,000 miles) showed copper levels were still slightly elevated, but dropping. I, too, change the oil at 5,000-mile intervals, using M1 5W-30 and the Motorcraft filter.
What filter are you using, Jon?

Not to start another 'Oil thread'....... but, I recently saw the Mobil 1 0W-20 synthetic oil. Is this going to be yellow water??? 0 weight?? Huh?

OW-20, which implies "0" viscosity, technically an impossibility. So, it's marketing hype, and ...:bs: . We're sticking with Amsoil.:D

Folks,
I have changed the oil twice since new, once at 1000 miles and yesterday at 4915 miles. Both times using standard Motorcraft 5W-20 oil and standard Motorcraft FL-820S filter. Didn't spill a drop out of the drain pan this time. :) :)
I plan to switch to Mobil 1 0W-20 at the next change, 10000. I will change every 5000.
There is nothing wrong with Mobil 1 0W-20. It is the oil called for in our cars by Mobil 1. It directly replaces 5W-20 and gives a tad bit better protection for low temp starts. Mobil 1 specifically decided to market 0W-20 vs 5W-20 for Fords and Hondas. I also use it in my wife's 2002 Acura TL-S.
I'm presuming that seeing the little bit of filings is still okay at 5000 miles?

I, too, change the oil at 5,000-mile intervals, using M1 5W-30 and the Motorcraft filter. Here ya go!

Metal the size of filings is not OK. Submit the oil for analysis.

Actually, 0W-xx oils are neither marketing hype nor BS...the "0" designates an oil which has a CCS (Cold Cranking Simulator) rating tested at -35°F. 5W-xx oils are referenced at -30°F and 10W-xx oils at -25°F.
A 0W-20 oil will flow better at lower temperatures, while still maintaining the proper viscosity at operating temperature.

bobby: Yes, you CAN run a 5W-30 in this motor, although during the warranty period, you may want to stick to the factory recommended 5W-20. Motorcraft 5W-20 (available at Wally World for $1.42/qt) has put up some very impressive UOAs and is turning out to be an excellent oil when used in the Ford modular motors.

The term for what you found, if you had a British motor or car, is SWARF. Kind of rhymes with BARF. In either case it is not a good sign.:bigcry:

Maybe "filings" is a bit strong. There was a little bit of very fine graininess at the bottom of the drain pan about the size of very fine sand particles.

I built a 408W stroker for my Cobra and the first few oil changes showed a goldish "Pearly" appearance.....I was sick!!! :o As it turned out the cam lube I used is a "Moly" type and gives this appearance!! :beer:
Could be that Ford uses some Moly lube in assembly and it takes awhile to get it out of the system?? :confused:
Keep us posted if you send a sample for analysis. :help:

it could be just that, sand....Next time have the oil analyzed by Blackstone or www.oaitesting.com and know for sure....I am fairly certian you have nothing to worry about.

Just a thought and FWIW .....
Are you sure that the filings are metallic ?
Plastic filings could / would indicate cam chain guides.

They looked metallic, not like sand or plastic but I will check for sure with a magnet if they are ferrous. If aluminum, I'm not sure how to check other than analysis.
I think I'll wait until the next oil change and look into this more carefully with an oil analysis.

Motorcraft Super Premium is a Conoco Semi Synthetic Blend. I use it in ALL the progressive trucks we work on (3.0L DUratec V6) and I use it in my old beat up CVPIs too, 130K and still running 5W20...no leaks!
The FL-820S from the factory (if its grey) is made by Champion Laboratories. The FL-820S that you buy from the retail shelf, ford dealer, or whatever is made by Purolator. The "S" is the silicone anti drainback valve!

I experienced the same thing. First oil change at 900 miles, had what appeared to be small black specks of metal in oil drain pan. Second oil change at 2800 miles was done by a dealer so I don't know what it looked like. Third oil change at 5000 miles had specks of metal in the drain pan again. Forth oil change at 6000 miles no metal noted. Motorcraft 5W-20.
