Paul - I thought with the updated axels the condition was corrected.

Don't be fooled by the growling noise. I had two local Ford mechanics tell me it was the carrier bearing in the rear or possible the axle bearings. Two new axles and axle bearings later and a new pinion bearing and the noise was still there. It was an unbalanced drive shaft. The noise started about 78-82 mph. Balancing your drive shaft is very cheap - $35. I would start there first.

Just noticed howling/growling noise on last trip up to Unos/Chicago Grill - noticable at all speeds, driveline related as it increases w/speed of car regardless of in or out of gear or engine speed - so drive shaft or rear could be the problem! Now, to figure out which one?

Glenn: I've got a MMDX driveshaft installed. Besides, the noise can be heard at speeds well below that. It can even be heard driving through my neighbor hood at 25 MPH. Then car has 75K on it anyway!

It has nothing to do with the 4.10's. Either way, under the TSB or extended warrranty, it will be covered.

Finally, the beast has new axles. The 1st trip in they rebuilt the limited slip diff. as per TSD after they road tested the car. They called it "Limited slip axle chatter." Gee, never heard that one before. Growling noises (bearing noise) still there. Cost $50.00.
Took the car back Tuesday (2nd trip). This time they got it right. As stated to them the first time, it sounds like bearing noise to me......Beast now has two new axles, bearings, and seals. As stated in there paper work, "Both axles badly worn in bearing area." Gee, that's what I said the first time...Sure is nice a quiet now. Cost this trip....ZERO!
I like the servicing dealer I use, I understand they have procedures that they must follow, and what Ford will let them do, etc. But, gee, sometime we elderly gear heads do know what we're talking about.
At any rate, I now have new axles, a rebuilt limited slip diff. and thanks to extended warranty, and TSB, total cost $50.00.
Let's see, since last February when I had the overheating problem, new thermostat, fresh antifreeze, rebuilt engine, new windshield, new axles and bearings, rebuilt limited slip, total cost $100.00. Now that's a great return for the purchase of the extended warranty......

If the drive shaft gets balanced does that obviate the need for the metal matrix drive shaft?

No, not if your into high speed driving. The advantage of the metal matrix
drive shaft is that it doesn't flex at high speeds. Balancing the stock
aluminum one will not cure that.

Just had the axle TSB completed on the Blackbird...
The dealer I had do the work (not where I bought the car) was pleasant, efficient, prompt, and made me feel like they cared...in short, my experience was the exact opposite of what I thought a trip to a dealer would be. I couldn't sleep last night for worrying about what could go wrong or how much hassle I'd get (mods?...what mods?)
Kudos to Lighthouse Ford in Falmouth, MA! ...you guys rock!

I didn't get extended warrenty when I purchased the car. It's 14 months old. Any idea if I can still purchase? I've had GM come back and over me extended well into the purchase before.

I just got a letter in the mail yesterday from Ford offering to sell me an extended warranty...my basic warranty runs out in Sept or in another 2500 miles, whichever comes first, so I'd say the answer to your question is "Yes".

If you are within 3 years or 36k, you can still purchase a new vehicle extended warranty from Ford. I recommend PremiumCare because it covers 500+ components.

You can buy any Ford Extended Service plan before the vehicle reaches 3yrs or 36,000 miles.
After the first 12,000 miles, there is an additional $100 charge.

This is great news. What does the PremiumCare package run at $wise? Should I go direct to Ford or the dealership?

I don't recall what I paid for mine, but I gotta tell ya, it's more than paid for itself after the basic 36K went bye-bye. The engine was replaced at 52K along with the windshield that was broken while in Ford's care. As far as going to the dealer, their are many companies out there that will sell you an after market extended warranty, but, I have never had the first problem with the Ford policy and the dealer that has sercviced my MM since new. I take it in for warranty work, it's done, no questions asked, no delays, no BS, I pay my $50 and drive away knowing that if it's not right, they'll repair it for free. Just like the axles, they rebuilt the 3rd member first as per their TSB procedures, still wasn't fixed, I took it back and they replaced the axles and bearings which was the cause anyway, with no exctra payment from me. I'm quite happy with the Extended Warranty from Ford.

Curious as to what caused the engine to be replaced?

Curious as to what caused the engine to be replaced?
Engine overheated due to a stuck thermostat in Feb.'04, replaced in April '04.
