Since you guys are talking about CR tonight, are there different alcohol contents for CR sold in Canada vs that sold in the States? I could be way off here but I seem to recall years ago that you could buy in Canada a 60 or 70 proof version that was even more sippable (no ice prefered) than the 80 proof stuff I find now. Anyone know or have I just lost too much gray matter? :thinker:

I thought 114 Old Grandad had something to do with it's age, but turns out it's PROOF! That's 57% ethanol, and not far off the alcohol we fix tissue and use to decon the lab. Seems to me, that stuff's gonna take the skin off your poor tongue, and it's the reason why I'm not a fan of Wild Turkey (102 proof). Single malt Scotch and Cognac run about 40% (80 proof) and Jack Daniels Black is 86 proof. I'd think anything around 100 proof and above would be considered mixing whiskey. :dunno: It'd be great in a bong, though.:D

One time i made the mistake of doing a double of everclear straight up, that really sucked, Bacardi 151 is good stuff too. And lest we not forget the Wildman Special: equal portions of Jack, Tequila, Vodka, and Coke. We boycott Jack Daniels around here.

Ever since they dropped the alchohol level in their Black Label brand (to 80 proof) and chose to NOT tell the public and continue to sell it with the traditional 86 proof Black Label and the same price....

Hell, I never noticed till one day a few years back I read the label for some odd reason, and said WTF??? When did they do that?

Screw them. J.D. is old school, there are a hundred smoother blends out there than theirs.;)

I know about the whole dropping of the alcohol content, i just get the normal everyday stuff. Nothing fancy. I only get down on it cause it is oldschool and that's one of the first things i ever had. I really don't drink it too much anymore, i have a bunch of friends from the Ukraine so we usually hit up the imported vodka. I'm tryin to get in shape though so my consumption of alcoholic beverages has tapered off.

My Sister-In-Law gave me a bottle of uncut, unfiltered
(George T. Stagg) bourbon at 138 proof that is definately for sipping, not mixing. Again, very, very smooth.
Turkey 102 is also very good, but IMHO Old Grand-Dad is so much better, just like Woodford Reserve with a lesser proof.

The age has everything to do with it and being bourbon, not whiskey is the difference. Mike.
I'll remember not to ask for any when I come for a visit; but, just to set the record straight: "There are strict laws (http://www.straightbourbon.com/27cfr5.pdf) governing just what a Bourbon must be to be labeled as such. For example, at least 51 percent of the grain used in making the whiskey must be corn (most distillers use 65 to 75 percent corn). Bourbon must be aged for a minimum of two years in new, white oak barrels that have been charred. Nothing can be added at bottling to enhance flavor, add sweetness or alter color."
"Jack Daniel's, is not considered a bourbon because it is charcoal-mellowed -- slowly, drop by drop, filtered through sugar-maple charcoal -- prior to aging, which many experts say gives it a different character. The process, called the Lincoln County Process, infuses a sweet and sooty character into the distillate as it removes impurities. But up to and after the charcoal filtering, the Jack Daniel's production is much the same as any other Bourbon. Jack Daniel's and George Dickel are two fine Tennessee Whiskeys though neither can be called bourbon."
Of course, I, in my advancing years, have turned to single malt Scotches and Congac, mostly. I'm still a fan of Jack Daniels, though, and there are times I'll sip some when the mood hits.:D

Mike,
I am no expert by any means, and did not mean to insult anyone by what their tastes prefer.
There is whiskey and there is bourbon. I prefer bourbon as it is generally smoother in taste than the whiskeys' such as Jack Daniels. Winter is when I do the most "sipping" preferring rum in the other months. Of course beer is always welcome.
I have tried Scotch many times in different ways (straight, w/water, etc.) and cannot seem to develope a taste for it. Congac, on the other hand, . .
I guess I should think more before opening my mouth. But hey, it's all good times!

Oh, c'mon Mike, you didn't insult anyone, and can like or dislike anything that suits you,or not ...even if you are a neener neener booger head.:neener:

I think, with Scotch, especially the single malts, it's an age thing, most likely, the older we get the more we can spend on stuff we think is supposed to make us, um, sophisticated, swave and deboner. BTW, most of us drink the stuff neat, and I like it in a brandy snifter, to enhance the aroma. It's almost as much enjoyment to sniff as sip it. I have not tried it in a bong, yet, although we filled one with wild turkey once, ...many years ago.;)

Nice answer. Thanks for the elaboration.

Wow! This is the most info regarding whiskey, bourbon and scotch I've ever gotten, besides finding out how long it will take before it will get me drunk. :D It gives me more of an appreciation of the harder stuff. I'm not quite up to the sophistication you're all at yet, so I'm just going to stick to my tried and true Labatt Lite.

What's with that, Barry; local regs or something? I just took a look at my new bottle of Black Label Jack Daniels, and it's 86 proof, just like always. I wonder what's going on?:dunno:
OK...I had to consult a local expert before I replied to your post.
Grandpa.:P

He claims that I was misinformed as to when the switch actually took place. Apparently it was just this past year.

So, as far as the bottle you just bought, it must be an 'old' one.
All the recent batches arriving around here have been changed.

Jim Beam Black is still 86%.

Yes. That's right. Be afraid. I know it was you. Start trembling. There's no excuse. I will destroy you, you mind blowing little fart head.

Peanuts have more substance than the vomit emitting from your face-hole.

Don't make me do it. Don't. I'm tellin' ya. Don't! That's it! I'm gonna do it! You're makin me.... Gulp.

...Note to others: Never let your glass of crown royal tell you how to run your website. It'll never have a good outcome. Especially if your name is crown royal.

This, Paul, explains everything:

Three Dog Night , Joy to the World:

Jeremiah was a bull frog. Was a good friend of mine.
I never understood a single word he said;
but I helped him drink his wine; ...
and he always had mighty fine wine.

That's amazing, Barry. I'll check our retailers and see if it's something local to your area, or a nationwide switch. Perhaps there's something on line about it. ;)

Sapping Jack Daniels' Strength

NASHVILLE, TN-September 30, 2004 — One connoisseur says he's sure that Jack Daniels "is spinning in his grave." <!-- This is for the middle ad --->

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>That follows word that the famous "sippin' whiskey" has lowered the alcohol content of its Old Number Seven Black Label.

The whiskey now registers 80 proof, instead of 86, and some drinkers feel betrayed.

Modern Drunkard magazine editor Frank Kelly Rich says the company cannot get away with messing with a legend.

The company says most customers prefer the less potent mix. But there are still higher-kick specialty versions on the market.

Some critics allege the company is trying to save money by watering down the whiskey. An online petition asking the company to switch back has gathered about 700 signatures.

OK....I'm back in Rochester at one of the best package store I have ever graced.

I found the 114 grand dad....but backed out when the owner pointed me to something special.

Eavan Williams single barrel. The barrel was shipped to their store 9/98 and the bottle I bought was filled in 2002. It has a special label indicating the dates, the barrel number, and the bottle number.

Sweet!!! And good stuff. Barreled special for this store.

They also have a barrel of your favorite Haggis!!!! The bottles are all numbered dude! And here's the kicker....
The owner offered me the Barrel!

OMG. I magine a barrel, empty of course, of Glenfiddich. Don't quote me...I need to go back and check, but I think it's the 30 year stuff. What a conversation piece.

Good deal for ya' Barry. Once you finish the bottle, go find Grand Dad to drink with you.
And maybe a stogie to go with it? :D

Did we ever find who got Logan all riled up?

Or is this now officially an alcohol thread? In that case, Crown Royal for me when I'm feeling Canadian, Knob Creek when I visit my sister in Louisville and Iron City if I want to damage my body.

I don't drink very often anymore, but I do like a 'good' beer like Sam Adams, and I guess a yearly 'brain cleaning' with some Jack Daniels is OK too.

I won't smoke pot again until I retire because I could lose my clearance.

But some day...
