I happened to see the new (?) Pontiac GTO commercial on TV last night. Pretty catchy advertisement .... I like it. :D 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds, 6.0 liter, 400 HP, 4 bucket seats ..... nicely done. I'm still not overly thrilled with the jelly bean shape; but it seems that Ford could learn a little in the marketing arena from these folks.

If this is an old ad .... I apologize ... 'cause I rarely watch channels with ads on them. Saw this one on "Speed" watching the IROC/NASCAR stuff from Daytona. :)

Yeh, Mark. I'm with Charlie on this one. That Poncho has potential, and when they get some of the "issues" ironed out ie. the transmission that won't shift, and some other things, that could be a great car. As far as styling goes, look at the arguements we're having over the Chrysler and Dodge offerings. Some folks are willing to put up with the looks of anything that (might) go fast, but, they want a car that has a transmission that works. Me? I like Marauders, ...for now. :D

One more thing about looks. Remember when the Caprice came out? You know, the ugliest car ever produced? When they turned it into the SS, everyone went nuts over it. They took an ugly duckling and turned it into a super car.

Blue - You are correct FMC could learn a lot from that commercial.

Actually to tell you the truth, I really really like the Holden Monaro CV8, not the Pontiac GTO, but the way it existed in it's previous format. The styling of the car was much better in it's Holden format, it wasn't as powerful but it definatly looked better and driving around with a right hand steer version of what everyone would think was a GTO would be cool.
"Hey where'd you get that GTO?"
"What GTO?"
"That one right there."
"Oh, that's not a GTO, that's a Monaro CV8"
and just drive away, you'd leave people scratching their head. Has anyone seen the Holden UTE? It's like a restlyed El Camino, it has the front of the Monaro/GTO, it's definatly a lot nicer than it sounds, i didn't think it would look too good when i heard about it but I saw a picture of it and it doesn't look that bad, pretty unique.

I like that. On the subject of Australian cars, Ford needs to bring this over:

AWESOME!!!! Others who feel the "GTO" was better as the Monaro CV8!!! Also, found some pictures of the UTE

This is the UTE in it's "S" trim

I happen to think the UTE looks sweet. And I totally agree that more cars made for the foreign market should be brought to the states. Either that or we should all buy that ford GTP and import it.

EDIT:
Although now that i look at bigger pictures of the UTE, i retract my previous statement about it looking like the Monaro, it actually kinda looks like the new Monte Carlo, now that i look at it, especially if you look at the side molding and follow it all the way back to the rear. Crazy stuff.

Yea, i see it too but if you look at the rear and how the line from the door to the rear works it does look like a Monte (but then again , i see weird stuff so don't trust my eyes). Either way, i think it's sweet looking.

They could easily market that as a new SHO over here.

5.4L V8. 290Kw of power (I don't remember the conversion to Hp. Somebody here will probably chime in).

1 horsepower = 746 watts = 0.746 kW. So, 290 kW ~ 389 horsepower if I did my math correctly. :D

I would have to say that this would be a 300C killer (from http://www.fpv.com.au/index.asp?link_id=2.180):

The Boss 290 combines the best of both worlds, with race-bred power and everyday comfort. The awe-inspiring Boss 290 is a powerplant unlike any ever built in this country and comes to life on Australia's only current V8 production line.

The Boss 290 was developed right here in Australia by Ford Performance Vehicles for our unique requirements and to meet the rising demands of a new breed of Aussie V8 drivers.

Its 5.4-litre capacity, 32 valves and double overhead camshafts per bank therefore work in concert to produce 290 kilowatts of power and a phenomenal 520 Newton metres of torque. So not only is there free-revving top-end power but a wall of torque at low speeds as well. In combination with the tuned stainless steel exhaust system, it produces the trademark rumble that lets you know you're driving a real, blue-blooded Aussie V8. It has a quality that clearly communicates who exactly owns the road.

WOW! Without the rear wing and vinyl I would be all over this car... So Ford does still produce sweet vehicles, they just don't market them at home... Apparently, we would rather the bland and under-powered Ford 500  :(

I have lived in Oz before and I think they build great cars down there. Interesting they build all sorts of wild Ford and Holdens (as well as the Mitsu Diamante they sell in the US) and export to the middle east. Remember, Oz has a population of only 18 million, the same as the NYC metro area. I think Lutz tried to do it by bringing the 04 GTO. Its a fantastic car (I owned one but had to sell as it is too small for me to carry around my parents in w/wheelchairs) and even with just 350 hp will blow the doors off of just about everything on the road. Top speed was 165, now theyve got 400 hp so who knows? Anyway, Lutz's experiment hasnt done so well due to 1, dealers trying to gouge the first in line for the 04s and 2, whiners saying the new GTO doesnt look like an old one (this pissed me off because I also happen to own a 67 GTO and dont expect any new car to look like that). Hopefully, the 05s will do better. I would prefer, however, for Ford and GM to take a good look at what sells here (300C) and think about building Oz type sedans and coupes right here in the US of A. That means V8 power, RWD!!!!
