View Full Version : 31 spline axle
I talked to Moser a couple of months ago and they wanted me to send a pair of axles for fitting. I ran across this artile while surfing Crownvic.net. Any one have any thoughts on this ?
After talking to Ned and reading the P71 Lap of America post. I did some research and have been able to confirm that the Lincoln Town Cars with limo prep package come from the Factory with 31 splne axles. Ford part # F8VZ-4234-AA, My cost was $187.59 each
I thought this might be a good upgrade for cars running more power (super chargers, turbos or N2O.)
Obviously these new, bigger axles would require a 31 spline carrier and new, larger axle bearings. stock, 28 spline axles are ~1.3" dia, where the 31 spline axles are ~1.6" dia.

Your best bet might be to have Moser cut a specific set of axles for you. They did a custom set of 31 spline for me pretty cheap. Lidio is installing them now. Jerry Barnes has a set on his Trilogy car as well.

That's what we did for L.K.
The Moser representative I was talking to said that the Marauder axle was not on file and I would have to send a pair for fitting. He also stated that they might not be able to cut the ABS tone ring. My interpretation is that my A.B.S. would not work properly. His statement may not be true, but I didn't not have confidence in dealing with him. Seems like others had better luck.

Which axles do the Police CV's have?
Thanks,

I don’t know what’s going on with the whole Moser axle thing but as MERC said they don’t have anything going on with Marauder axles at this time. When I broke the axle in my MM back in October, I went through all of this and ended up with a total dead end when it came to "bolt-in" 31 spline axles for the MM. As of the last few weeks to the very best of my knowledge you still can not buy a 31 spline axle from any one that’s a direct fit for the MM.
I had my local Ford dealer order about six different axles for the various panthers from the last ten year or so and came up with one that was the exact same length as the MM axle and was a 31 spline. But the axle bearing surface on the outer end was bigger then a MM and the ABS ring was different. Luckily the stock MM ABS ring will press off the original axle and fit right on to the new one we found. But the bearing surface has to be turned down about .150 I believe, cant remember the exact amount, I’m at home writing this. I was told that even after the hardened axle surface was turned down that the hardness still checked out OK so we went with it.
There’s been a lot of talk about Moser when it comes to axles for the MM, but up until about four weeks ago they still said they had nothing. And I believe that “Limo” Axles are what I came up with, but there are not a direct bolt in as some might believe… unless my local dealer just didn’t do enough research.
Thanks

Moser custom cut mine from a set of stock axles that we sent them. We then pressed the ABS rings on. No grinding of the axle surfaces that I recall.
Todd made the arrangements for me on this. I will get with him later today and ask him who he was in touch with at Moser. Hopefully Moser saved the specs but don't know it.
Unless it was Strange (literally) that got us the axles......
:dogrun: To whom it may concern: As the Lincoln Limocare service advisor for the dealership I work at, I will do some research on the 03 & up Limousine axle shafts and assemblies. I know for a fact that the axle assemblies are different and they were not prone to the early (pre 01/03) bearing failure concern. In the prior model years (98-02) Limousine 418 package the rear axle assemblies were very different than the stock TC/GM/CV axles, even to the point of using drum brakes rather disc brakes, for this heavy duty application. Nothing would swap, except for the ring & pinion gear in those model years.

Here are the new 31 Spline Marauder Axials. I had these machined to accept ABS reluctor rings and they have hardened wheel studs, I have three sets in stock.
