View Full Version : Eyeballing Motor City job
Hey, I'm pursuing a job at the Detroit Free Press as an automotive writer. (God forbid I should actually get to write about cars for a living ... I'll never get the smile off my face.)
Any Motor City folks got any news, tips, slander about the Free Press, its business coverage or the automotive coverage by the paper? I just want to be prepped, in case they want to grill me.
Anyway, I still can't imagine I'd be giving up winters with no snow for snow tires on the Marauder. But, I've got my fingers crossed they like my clips and want to interview me.
If I get a chance to head north, I'll definitely want to get involved with the Motor City gang.

The Freep is the morning paper and the Democrat half of the Joint Operating Agreement. The autocoverage is OK, the business coverage is so-so, and the sports coverage is very good. Both papers recently came off of a long bitter strike where the union was beaten up pretty good. All in all the Freep is above average these days.

I wish you luck on this job. The guy that writes for the "Free Press" isn't to bad. I wish you were replacing the husband and wife team that write for the "Detroit News". Paul and Anita Leinart are so "anti-American" that they get on my nerves. Good luck and look us up when you come.

Yes, please come replace the idiot couple Paul and Anita Lienert. Theres been so many times ive read their anti american stance and thought how they need to go. They do this stupid He Said, She Said bit that puts them poking fun at each other while they review the cars. Uggghhh.
Anyways, i read both papers on line, the Freep and the News. I like them both for different reasons. I really hate how the papers have to take a political stance, its like listening to your stupid democrat uncle that thinks he knows everything. Just report the news..
Hope you get the job!!
Mary, TAF,
It hasn't been easy to find anytime to visit online these last few months. :alone:
I've spent most of my time getting used to being married and being ground down by an overload at work.
What else? I stepped down as business editor at my paper in December after 2 1/2 years in the job to be a writer again. The new editor ... she lasted 3 weeks and reached the same conclusion I did. We had an emergency staff meeting yesterday to find out she'd didn't want the job either and "management" put the lifestyles editor in charge of business temporarily. (This editor has never written or edited business stories before, so I'm not sure how well she's gonna do ... but I'm predicting disaster with scattered embarrasment.)
Needless to say, I'm looking for a new job because I don't want to be here when it all hits the fan. There isn't much else to say on that.
As for Detroit, it would be a move closer to my family. (That's a good thing ... I swear.) My sister and her family live in Detroit, where her husband works for Ford as a design engineer.
I remember the newspaper strike. It was happening while I was working for newspapers in northern Ohio and all anyone was talking about was whether they would be willing to work as a scab for the papers. (I wasn't certainly ... my dad was a union steward for Conrail and my mom's in a militant teacher's union.)
Still have the MM, though it's been looking pretty dusty. (I haven't given it as much attention since I got married ... go figure.) I see the next meet is in Detroit, so I'm hopeful I'll be able to go this time around.
Thanks for all your thoughts. It's good to be home among friends.

Someday you'll look back at this ... and shuffle your feet nervously and change the subject.
