I've seen some threads where people are talking about driving their Marauders in the snow. This has made me think that many younger people grew up with FWD and this may be the first RWD car they've owned. Let's see.

I'm 38, and I've only owned 2 front wheel drive cars (including the wifes new Escape), and that's about 18 +/- since I started driving. I actually look for rear drive vehicles as the front drives are generally smaller cars. Wouldn't have it any other way!

Just turned 30 yesterday. Learned to drive in a '77 Mercury Colony Park w/460ci. My first car (which I still have) is an '86 Merkur XR4Ti. Also RWD. My last two cars were an '87 Mustang and an '02 Taurus. So, I tend to like RWD over FWD.

Hey Dan, I'm 40 and have owned LOTS of RWD cars but grew up in the South.... no snow! Since being in MI since '92 I've only driven FWD and my RWD pickup in the snow. I wouldn't dare drive my MM in the snow, (even with Blizzaks) but that's just me... I'd DIE if anything happened to my MM. I love it so much I'd rather know that it's safe during the winter.

I'm 27 and had a 1991 Mustang LX 5.0L 5-speed as my first car. Trying to handle that beast as an experienced 16 year old driver was a challenge in the dry, let alone the snow.

I owned a 94 Mercury Sable for about 2 Weeks when I was 17. That was all the FWD I could stand. Never Looked back.

I live in Florida so snow is not an issue. But this is my first American RWD car, the others beeing Jap or German. I've love everytime I get in my Marauder.

I park mine in the winter. Its not because I cant drive it on the ice (first year I put on 3k between Jan and ice out) Its for fear of tweeking one of the plastic valances if I needed a pull. IMO there are just a few things that help winter driving 1) New skins. If you are going to put on new tires (all seasons) do it in the winter not the heat of summer. 2) You dont have a motor on top of your drive axels. Put one there i.e. sand bags. 3) Put tranny into neutral before gentely applying brakes while giving yourself plenty room to stop. Even more at busy intersections. 4) Start out in second gear in the slippery stuff. This really makes a differance along with throttle control. Youve been trying to spin em all year now you have to try NOT to. High stall torque converter on the ice? Now your really looking for a wreck. 5) Drive defensively and always have a Out.

Follow this and our wrong wheel drive friends should make it! :up:

I'm 24 and all I've ever had are big rear wheel drive cars. Two Caprice station wagons, 83 and 84. 91 Olds station wagon, 99 Crown Vic, and now the Marauder. I have to have a big car, and I hate front wheel drive.

Allways had rwd .there alot more fun in the snow.The car before the MM was the first fwd (SSEI) i ever owned. I will never but other fwd for me , maybe for my wife though...

I've owned more RWD than FWD cars.

I'm originally from NJ & have only been in FL a couple of years now.

First REAL snow experience in a RWD car - a 79 Delta 88, long before even having a drivers license. I was @ 15 I think(33 now) ... & the house we lived in had a rather steep driveway entrance that could be tough to get a RWD car up when it snowed &/or there was ice. Once you were up it, it was fine(level) ... but getting up over the sidewalk was a task sometimes.

Parking spots on our street were in pretty good demand when everyone was home in the evening under normal weather conditions. When it snowed ... it was worse. Anywhoo ... one time my father ended up parking the car on another street around the corner when we had a lot of snow. I knew my father was sound asleep at the time & would NOT be getting up &/or going anywhere. Grabbed his keys - walked around the corner & took a spin. A fun spin it was - but mostly un-eventful. I didn't try getting too crazy ... I pretty much followed whatever I had learned by watching him drive in such conditions & I did fine. One of MANY times I took a car out LONG before having a license & him not knowing - lol.

Funny now looking back on it ...

I'm not sure if the Delta was my first RWD car in the snow or not. My father worked part time for a limo company & they had a couple of regular 84 Town Car sedans ... (1) two-tone blue Signature Series - (1) two-tone white/silver Cartier(Cartier only color combo for 84-85) & a white 85 Grand Marquis LS. These three cars single handedly began my admiration of the Panther cars ... in fact I still have it REAL bad for that blue TC ... I'd LOVE to find one just like it to this day.

One night he stopped home on his way back from a run before taking the car back & it was snowing. I asked if I could tag along while he took the car back. He had the GM with him, which I had yet to ever be in one(had been in both the TC's & LOVED them). Only took me about 10 minutes in the GM & I was loving that as well ... just as plush & "Big Daddy Warbucks" in there as the SS & Cartier TC's. This GM was as good as it got back in its day ... an LS with the factory optional padded coach roof(ala Signature/Cartier Town Car style).

The office of the limo company was in a strip center type storefront, with a storage garage in the rear. We get back to the office, my fathers Delta was parked out front covered with snow. We stop at the Delta to warm it & clean it off. As the Delta is warming up ... my father is sort of thinking out loud how far of a walk it is around the back of the strip center under normal weather conditions let alone such crappy weather, to the storage garage where he needs to put the GM(guess he didn't feel like opening up the office just to walk back thru to the front). Suddenly out of the blue he says ... "I think you need to follow me back there". Me : "Ummmm like .... ok" trying not to sound too enthused about a chance to take a spin. I go to jump in his Delta & my father stops me dead in my tracks & jokingly says ... "On no - you're driving the GM ... I'm not taking the chance of you smacking up MY car - smack up THEIR car if you must".

Around back we went with no problems.

I had been moving cars up & down the driveway since @ 14 ... so deep down he knew I would be just fine ... otherwise I'm sure he would have never let me do it.

Miss the Delta too.

For those of you who have never driven on snow or ice, (like those in FL - where I lived for 13 yrs.) the best comparison is like driving on a street full of wet leaves, you get the same amount of traction!

I've grown up with all RWD cars and have no plans of even dreaming of anything FWD and I hope to hell that isn't what the future car market holds for us. My worse nightmare would in fact me all compact FWD electric automobiles *crosses fingers*

Unfortunately, the right option isn't there for me... I'm under 30, and yes I have - several. From Toronto, and we get a fair bit of snow. Snow tires are a must, with any RWD (I think FWD should, too). I have NEVER added weight (other than maybe stereo)...

My "drivers ed" came in my father's 1984 Ford Econoline E350. My first car was a 1987 Caddie Sedan De Ville. FWD... Second car was an '88 Camaro. RWD, and haven't looked back. '95 Cougar XR7 (V8) was next. Obviously, the Lightning and Marauder remain with me.

I think some FWD cars get a bad rap. I think they all too often get sterotyped with lil' puddle jumper ricer type stuff.

Many people to this day will see a 66-78 Toronado or 67-78 Eldorado & have no clue. Even the 79-85 Toronado-Eldorado-Riviera bodied cars ... some people had no clue.

Some day when I have money to burn(yea right) I want to add the following FWD cars to my collection :

A 67 or 68 Eldorado
A 66 or 67 Toronado
A 70 Toronado GT
A 79-85 Eldorado
Another 79-85 Toronado - should have NEVER sold the red one :(
"Mightaswell" do a 79-85 Riviera as well & fully represent the 79-85 GM E-Body ... would already have (2) of them - would be silly not to have the 3rd.

The look on such peoples faces if you were to light up the FRONT tire(s) on such cars ...

My first car was a FWD - a 1968 Austin Mini. It didn't handle any better in the snow than all of the subsequent RWD cars that I had...in fact it was worse because of the lower ground clearance and those 10" tires.

The ONLY FWD car I have ever owned stays in the garage all winter :) No point in drive a convertible in the snow :P

I do agree that the the Caddy is an exception to the FWD rule. It is a dream to drive and that big old 500 inch engine really smokes the tires quick. On the other hand I would trade the Eldo for a mid 60 Continental convertible in a heartbeat.

I'm 21, and have driven the Marauder in the snow, but I also have a 67 mustang which I never drove in the snow and I have a Chevy Cavalier. The Cavalier in the snow is way better than the Marauder but I still feel it could be better due to the fact that it only weighs 2600lbs. Definitely I prefer a RWD vehicle and I can't wait to get an 06 or 07 Mustang!

I'm in the Air Force, in the Dorm, before i was married, i had two 1964 Ford Galaxies (one being a two door hard top 390 four speed car), a 63' Ford Galaxie four door sedan and a 93' pontiac T/A( LT1 six speed). Got married, Galaxies went bye bye, trade the T/A in on a 2001 F150 Supercrew back in 2000, Trade the crew in on a 2002 Mustang GT(missed 2003 MM, was dealer trade and leaving the lot as walked into the showroom :( Traded Mustang in on the 2004 Rauder i have now....no more new cars for me. I love the Rauder, but i miss my Gals

When I was very small my older brother and i rode around with our Mom in her '37 Cord phaeton for a year or so. Years later she got a new '73 Eldo. convert., when i was about 23, and because of those I thought FWD was pretty cool, better traction in snow, etc., until I bought a new '89 SSE when I got married. Not only did i hate the torque steer, it didn't really do well in snow. Not as good as an IRS in my experience with my '73 240-Z, esp. trying to start off from a stop into an uphill right hand turn, but what would, short of 4WD? When the SSE was a yr. or two old i actually ran it into a curb from the torque steer. Only reason we bought the '99 SSEi is because it boiled down to that is the vehicle she wanted. I remember now an article in Car & Driver talking about how well the late '80's or early '90's Volvo's worked in the snow with only RWD. I love my 4x4 F-150 when i need the traction, but for a passenger car it will be RWD for me please.

Yes, the '60s/early '70's Toronado's and Eldo's probably do qualify for some type of classic status. And they are so heavy that it is much harder to tell which end is driving, compared to later models. Like the Cord, they had the engine lined up the right way, and maybe that has something to do with having much less torque steer. I'm no engineer so i don't know.
Another nice thing about the fr. drivers is the smaller tunnel inside, much more interior room. I don't know about the Toronado's, but the Eldo rode like cloud nine. Really a feel of a luxury car. And I ALWAYS liked the looks of the early Toro's. 500 c.i. didn't hurt either.
But for late model stuff, I don't care for the side-winder blatant torque steer handling. And with a lot of torque i am concerned about longevity in the SSEi's drive train.

I forgot to mention my 81 Trans Am. But I had the motor out within the first month of owning it as I began the 400 build... which then I sold before finished.

Does my Victory count? It's RWD? :D
