View Full Version : ***Oil Deflector Installed - Pics***

Visited my L/M Dealer this morning for an oil change and wiper replacement.
Three of us and the Shop Foreman under my MM finally figured out how it is installed.
Now the test. . This deflector works like a charm! ! ! :)
All parties involved were very pleased with how well this works. It reduces their shop rags and clean up time and may prevent people from returning their cars thinking they have an oil leak.
Not one person at the Dealership has heard of this piece. . . until now! :D
A little oil, when removing the filter, did spill on one of the lines, but other than that, best damn $9.00 spent.
They replaced my wipers under warranty. No questions asked.
Thanks again Ray!
Enjoy the pics. .

sheer genius and the dirty underside of that DTR :)
Look for the black plastic thing under the oil filter, keeps the oil from the filter dripping out onto the cross member.

The first and last pic shows the deflector, black in color, just below the oil filter. The middle pic shows where the oil is draining out of the deflector.
It is clipped on to the steel lines which holds it in place.

Ah ha! :thinker:
Got it. It helped when I tilted my laptop screen. Cool, this is a factory part?

Nope, not for the MM's anyway. Made by Ford (supplier). It only works on the Panther platform w/rack and pinion steering.

You wouldn't happen to have the part number handy, would you?

$50.00 is definitely a "desperation" price.

Are they supposed to be left on the vehicle full time or do you pop it off after the oil change?

It is made to adhere to the power steering line.

Brian, dont start and try to sell mine, unless you really could get fifty bucks for it, then sell away.

MM2004 ...
I've been futzing on-and-off with mine, however, never was able to discern how the danged thing was supposed to mount; the pic's were a BIG help, however, a question .....
If installed as pic'ed, what does the back clip attach to ?
In my case ( when installed as pictured ), the only mount for the deflector is the front clip to the power steering plumbing; there's nothing in the rear to clip to. *Ya I know Crown Vic' versus Marauder, however, all 2003+ Panthers share the same steering components.

I cannot answer your question as the Shop Foreman installed the deflector.
Try placing the deflector as shown in my pics and see if you can determine if it clips onto 2 lines instead of just one?
One clip is angles from the other.

Both clips attach to the same P/S line - the line makes a 90 degree bend up behind the deflector. It's a little tricky fitting it in - at first it looks like "there's no way it's going in there!" Then it just drops into place and snaps on the line! Leave it there once you get it there!

And Yep ... Knew to leave it there.

It does go on real easy once you get it in the right place. That's what took all the time on the install. I just wonder if this is a result of the service oil change instructions saying that you have to clean the underside of the crossmember after an oil change. When I first got my car I took it to my nearby Ford dealer for an oil change before a long trip. After the service adviser did the usual "when did Ford make this?" comment I got it in the fastlube. The rack is out in the open for all the customers to see. I watched the tech looking under the car and then go to a service manual. After he was done, He sprayed degreaser on the cross member and sprayed it off with a hose, then dried it with a rag. This is what the advance service bulliten said to do on the MM oil change. I think once they figure the cost in shop supplies, extra labor, etc, the cost of making and installing the deflector makes sense. On one of my oil changes, they failed to clean the cross member, so I had a nice puddle on the garage floor the next day. Took it back and had that servicing dealer check it for a leak. A service come-back as a result of not doing the proper cleanup costs a dealer money. I know this makes sense, and some people feel Ford is not in the business of making sense, but maybe there's an engineer at Ford who hates a messy undercarriage as much as we do...

Good engineers are hard to find, and most of them get their hands tied by corporate not letting them spend a dime to save a dollar.
Funny, before I bought my MM, I told the dealer they had to fix the "oil leak." (It was dripping when I first looked at it, then two days later.) They tried to tell me that it was normal, because the oil was just changed. They ended up cleaning the area up real well to prove it to me, and I finally saw the light when I changed the oil myself the first time.
(Still trying to get the deflector on - I'll have to break down and print the pictures, I don't have a laptop to carry under the car. )

Thank you very much for these pictures. They made it very easy for me to snap the sucker into place in a few minutes just laying under the car without even jacking it up! It looks like it fits in there quite nicely and should do the job. My next oil change is in a few weeks.
I got my deflector from Ray a few days ago. Thanks, Ray!

They're just hard to find in Michigan. They have to import the smart ones from other states.

 I just crawled under the car to change the oil and install my new oil deflector so that this job would cease to be the PITA that it has been, when lo and behold I discover I can't get my oil dflector on: it seems the sensor for the oil temp gauge is in the way. I can see where the deflector should go, but after about 20 minutes of futzing around with it I figured it just wasn't gonna work. Mine is an AutoMeter #4347 with the sensor that came with the gauge. I used the port in the block of the MM just aft of the oil pressure sensor to mount the oil temp sensor. So .... anybody with the same set-up been able to mount the deflector or is there a different equally convenient location for me to move the oil temp sensor to?
