'Tanks' are mufflers. Rust does not look that bad. I've seen worse and i've seen better.

What is that black drum looking thing hanging off the bolts? I saw that a while ago on my car and can't figure out what purpose it serves...anyone?

The black drum is a vibration damper, filled with lead shot. The rust is normal.

My old '93 Grand Marquis had similar weights hanging off the exhaust pipes. When I took them off, I ended up with a "tinny" sound coming from the exhaust system. When I put them back on, the sound went away. I haven't looked at the exhaust on the MM-----I just drive it (28,000 miles in 9 months).

I got rid of the rust on my OEM mufflers by replacing them with a set of polished stainless steel Magnaflows....problem solved!

They are vibration dampers - the weight & the length of suporting arm are calculated to vibrate at a frequency/amplitude to cancel the the offending vibration problem in the existing part/equipment. I first started fabricating/installing them on stationary equipment in '91 using vibration analysis software from a predictive maintenance program - they work really well!

Yes indeed....
Polished and all!
Mine are dirty now, but if I were anal enough to crawl under and wipe them down, they would be just as shiney as day one.

First let say....that pic came from our gallery. Those aren't mine. I do have the very same ones, however, I am just too lazy to go out and uncover the car and crawl under to take the pic.:P
As far as performance, there are two reasons to do this mod.
#1 The regular driver that only wants a deeper, growly sound from their stock exhaust. These mufflers offer little more than that in this scenario.
#2 The driver that has replace their entire exhaust with freer flowing parts. This muffler IS a performance muffler in this respect....it IS freer flowing.
I am currently looking into a Magnaflow muffler to replace the OEM one on our Aviator. We want a deeper, yet unoffending sound from the V8.

What do you think about the sound I selected in the forum below? Would the MM sound the same or deeper? Loudness isn't a problem for me. I can control it when I want. I'm thinking it would be deeper since the MM is a bit longer length car than the Mustang.
