This isn't a joke...

My son is looking for information on the seasons of Antarctica.
I have searched with google and found a very limited amount of information.
The most I have found is Summer during December and January,
and Winter during June and July.

If someone can find exact dates, I would appreciate it with some sort of evidence.

I'm not clear on what the exact question is. But one of the best resources on Antarctica is Big Dead Place (http://www.bigdeadplace.com/). It is the unofficial site for the Raytheon contractors who run McMurdo Station. Think of "The Thing". Like most sources of information, this "unofficial" site has more truth than the "official" sources, even if they miss some facts.

Could you explain the seasons in Antarctica? On your broadcast you said
it was spring there? But isn't it summer in South America? I am confused?

Hi Kristen,

The seasons here in Antarctica are the same as in South America. The
soltice and equinox dates determine the seasons. Austral Summer is
from 21 December to 20 March, Fall is from 20 March to 21 June,
Winter is from 21 June to 22 September, and Spring is from 22
September to 21 December. So you're right, it is summer here now.
I'm sure the reference to spring on the show was much the same as you
might casually mention "What a cold winter it is!" in May if you
happen to be in a northern state like Minnesota.

If you have Netflix...I suggest renting the "Antarctica: IMAX movie". I have rented a few IMAX movies in the past (i.e. Alaska, Stormchasing, etc.) and have been pretty impressed with their information. Plus...it's always fun watching movies for homework! Good luck.

Anyhow, the dates of the season changes are the same, except they are REVERSED...in other words March 21 would be the first day of FALL....and Sept 21 would be the first day of SPRING and so forth....One important note would be that on the continent of Antarctica, the SUN remains UP continuously from about mid NOV to Mid JAN.......no darkness during that period..and of course, the same holds true for the NORTH POLE...only it's the period of mid may through early AUG......

Exactally, just the opposite of up here. Our Summer is their winter, and when we have winter, they have 'road construction'.
