I had the dealer install my 4:10s yesterday and of course it was snow and ice out for the ride home so I could not floor it. Today I gave it quite a workout and all I can say is WOW!!!!!
I have the chip and now the gears and what a diiference. Drives great and accelerates much better.
All warrantys remain in effect.

Cool! Mine just went in on Wednesday. I tried to take it easy on the car, but that lasted about 5 minutes.

This is great! Make a HUGE difference.

Had a local Linc/Merc dealer do it for me. It's where I bought my car from. I own my own repair shop but since the warranty stays in effect if they do the job it was a no brainer.

Congrats, Mike, I remember my first ride too. Guess what, this isn't going to wear away very soon, after six months of driving with chip and 4:10s, she still sucks me back into the seat.

Now, you can look forward to getting that kind of performance boost once again, by installing the Stallion torque converter. If you agree that the chip and gears deliver maybe a 25% gain in your seat-of-the-pants meter, another 25% on top of that waits for you down the road.

Thank’s Mike, I just may have to do that. I have 2 more local dealers to try. I’ve been to 4 dealers plus the one I bought the car from and all say no.:(

I forgot until recently that I paid only about $140 for my 4.10s from Diversified Products in Plymouth, MI. Their phone number is (734)459-0130 I think. They sell genuine Ford gears.

I was going to go for the chip/180T/plugs, but now...!!!
I just gotta have the 4:10's too!!!
How much cut in milage?

I ask again...can you have instant fried tires with the 4.10s and chip...and YES it is important to a woodhick...so don't even ask...

If you want them, but you'd need to use a "touch" of "power-brake", Willie. That is you, right Willie? a.k.a. prchrman?

You won't get one like Bill's (mensrea's) with just the chip/gears. But, she sure drives like she should have from the factory...

Smooooooth...

Honestly, the big difference I've seen is her "comfort zone" is about 90mph with the 4:10s. THAT needs to be watched...or you can get yourself into trouble even in a 70mph zone.

She's great at 70 & 80, don't get me wrong...but, you know how cars have that zone where everything "clicks"....well, stock felt like 75-80 and with the gears it's at 90...

Does that make sense to you?

Oh yea! My P71 (w/3.27s) is silky smooth and just hitting the power curve around 90MPH also. :banana2:  :banana2:

Well, I had the 4:10's installed at the dealership, so the whole car is still under warranty.
I think the techs stood in line to see who would get the job!

At first I didn't notice a big change, thats cause I was babying it for a tank of gas. That tank I got 16.9 mpg

The next tank was generaly driving it for fun an to se what it would do...
on that tank I got 13.9

Around town , I need to be carefull not to rev it up too high in first, or all the mileage goes out the window.

on the highway, its amazing what it will do between 60 and 120
its like everyone suddenly stands still as I scream by.

I really have to get used to the car generally reving higher
at 60 its at 2050 rpm at 90 its taching right at 3000
75 to 80 seems like its general cruising speed, it'll do that all day

but otherwise it screams....
I can hardly wait till Dennis has the Supercharger kit created...I know he is working on it for a future release.

sorry for reviving an old thread. (I'll never be a senior member now! :(

Anyway, i called my dealer anomyously (sp.?) to ask if they would do labor only on a 4.10 gear install, they said it voids the warranty. I'd be interested to see anything in writing from any dealer that would do it and not void the warranty. I'd like to have some backup just in case down the road.

So now I'm calling speed shops to find someone to do it. Anyone in Ohio know of a place that will do it? I'll make the drive especially if they have done one or two before.

Yea darebren,

Up here in Troy (70 miles straight up I-75) there is a Transmission/Exhaust shop called Seaman's Transmission. They are known for the Quality work and GOOD prices. VERY good people!

As a matter of fact, I just called them today to find out a price on gear R&R myself.

How's $200 Labor sound!

Lemme know if you want their phone #.

Is my math right ??

Just experimenting here....

OK...... My P71 has 3.27s right now. Given

3rd gear is 0.70 and O/D is 1.00

If one was to turn off the O/D switch, would that fundamentally make 3rd Gear roughly 4.25:1 ??

Black Terror
04-07-2003, 03:10 PM
O/D is equivalent to 2.29

RF Overlord

Kat and wl:

R U sure you don't have that backward? Overdrive is usually less than 1-to-1 (like your .70) and top gear is usually just 1.00...

RF Overlord

Update:

Found this on the web; it's for the 4R70W...

1st: 2.84
2nd: 1.55
3rd: 1.00
4th: 0.70

Ooops! :help:

Well then. 3.27 - 29% (0.71 for O/D)

So when in O/D it would be 2.32:1.

Did I get it right this time ??

RF Overlord

:D

wl: I mis-read your reply...I thought you meant that the RATIO for O/D was 2.29...my bad...

Black Terror
04-07-2003, 03:53 PM
2.29 was rear axle ratio equivilent in O/D

The easiest way to calculate the effective gearing is to remember that all the respective gear reductions along the entire drivetrain multiply both the torque AND RPM. So, in 3rd gear (1.00:1), your 3.27:1 diff-equipped P71 would see the following RPM at the axles:

EngineRPM x 1.00 x 3.27 = axle speed RPM
(assuming torque converter is locked up and not slipping)

Same thing for transmitted torque (also with locked up converter):
EngineTorque x 1.00 x 3.27 = torque at the axles.

So, with a 0.70:1 overdrive ratio instead of the 3rd gear 1.00:1, the formula now looks like this:

EngineRPM x 0.70 x 3.27 = axle RPM
(or you could combine the 3.27 and .70 and get an effective gear ratio of 2.289:1 or rounding up, 2.29:1 )

********

Here's something to make you MM guys salivate:
Off the top of my head, I can't remember what a 4.6l DOHC will put out, torque-wise, at around 2500 (our stall speed?) but let's guess around 250 lb-ft at the crank?

Now, imagine a foot-to-the-floor launch in 1st gear from a complete stop, with 3.55 gears. Assuming a 2.5:1 torque multiplication factor during full stall, considering the 2.84:1 first gear and the 3.55 rear gears, that means that the rear axles see an instantaneous whallop of 250 x 2.5 x 2.84 x 3.55 or 6301.25 lb-ft of torque!!! 4.10 users get even more... 7277.5 lb-ft of instantaneous torque.

Yes. It states that the MM goes relatively faster the farther you depress the accelerator pedal.

You guys blow me away with these calculations.....I'm SO !!!!!

Looks like your 4.10 gears at 90 mph put the engine at an RPM where it's delivering enough torque to make cruising at that speed seem effortless. With 3.55 gears, not only are the axles receiving a *little* less torque due to the less-aggressive gear multiplication, but the engine might also not be delivering as much torque at that lower RPM to begin with. But I'm betting it's mostly the gear multiplication to blame for this improved cruising.

Not really, all I did was give you possible reasons *why* you're experiencing what you are. To prove it, we'd need to dyno the car with 3.55s, then with 4.10s, then precisely calculate the losses (aerodynamic and road/friction losses) for the different speeds you quote and map them against the dyno curves.

Now THAT would be a complicated mess, trust me. I had to do all this for our hybrid electric Ford Escort project for Ford's Hybrid challenge back in 1993.
