I have a friend with a thunderbird sc and he offered to pay half of the price for new 410 gears for my car if I gave him my old ones (presuming they would fit) does anyone know if this is possible? Any help is appreciated

I believe the SC uses the same 8.8" gears, so that would be a good deal for both of you...and 3.55s to a T-bird SC are like 4.10s are to us...

Along the same lines, 8.8 gears are 8.8 gears right? So just like above when I get my 4.10's I can put the 3.55's in my 1990 Mustang GT? (Which already has 3.27s I think but might as well go up if I got the gears...)

Anyway not to threadcrap of course. The reason I bring that up is I believe it's possible and therefore I don't see why this wouldn't work the the tbird so long as it's an 8.8 (which it is.)

A SC has a Independant rear, I highly doubt it would work in a MM. Plus I raced a T-brid SC when I was stock We were Neck and neck til about 65mph, then I pulled away and beat him by a full car. One Of My good Friends is a Supporting member on the T-bird SC Messageboard Ill find out all the info on if a swap is possible.

'fan, the difference between 3.55 and 4.10 is over 15%...going from 3.27 to 3.55 is only an 8% difference...I doubt you'd see enough of an improvement to be worth the cost/effort...but knock yerself out!

OK the differential from a SC would Work, The Pumpkin NO. Live Axle on the MM wont work with the Independant Rear on the SC. However they are 8.8's so the Gears WILL work So take his offer for the 4.10s

Yep, this is right. Marauderman put his old gears in his wife's t-bird when he upgraded.

Great memory there Brian--and gonna do it again--gonna put my old 410's in the Bird----so will have 355 's in a box--410's in the '97 Bird--and My MM with the 430's --will test this all out--and see what we like---outta be fun--

True, true...well, I do wanna do a trak-lok rebuild on it, I've never done gears myself maybe it'd be a time to learn. :) Then labor would be free and I'd have rebuilt trak-lok and 3.55's for about 60 bucks. Well, gotta swap out my Marauder gears before I even think this route. :D

I think the fact that you can swap in these 8.8 gears might help lower the cost of 4.10's for many people. I could sell my 3.55's to some Mustang guys stuck with the weak 2.78 geras (or whatever some of the 5.0 LX's have...) Doesn't cover all the labor and computer reflash but I bet you could get 100 bucks for a good ligthly used set of gears...

I've never done gears myself maybe it'd be a time to learn. That's a good attitude to have, 'fan... Just be SURE you enlist the help of someone with the right tools who's done it before, preferably more than once. If you don't get the pinion depth and backlash set correctly, you could end up with gears that whine, at the least, or a badly damaged differential at worst.

Any chance you can put the T-bird s/c's IRS setup into the Marauder or is the chassis engineering just completely against that? That would be very cool if the parts would work...

If you read the Ford Motorsport catalog you will see that the IRS is quite limited in it's torque capacity. Those wimpy 28 spline axles/joints would make a MM into a rolling grenade with the pin pulled. #3200 'Vettes are known for destroying their similar design IRS in dragracing.
