I've only been able to find 91 octane here in Los Angeles.
Is that going to give me problems long term? I notice most of you guys seem to be using 93...

I can't see why 91 won't work properly in the stock vehicle. Mine says min 91 octane on the gas gauge. Perhaps these guys running 93 have chipped their cars..........:)

Book says 91 or higher. I think we all strive for the highest we can find. Atleast I choose the highest at the best price wherever I am at. I kinda watch stations on my daily routine and top off when it's desirable.
I actually ran the car on 89 for a week. Definate performance loss. Since DR chip install, it's 91 or better.

^^^what beemer said^^^
Stock requires 91 octane, Dennis's chip wants 92 or better, although I believe he can program it for any octane you specify.
I wonder if the sensors are tight enough to feel the diff between 91 and 93 in stock programming?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, however I believe these motors are equipped with knock sensors? I know for sure the '03 CV and GM have them on the SOHC 4.6, not sure about our Marauders.

Yes, they do...
91 is not a problem...'cept she THEN wants 92...then 93...
typical woman!
Hence my wondering if the sensors have enough accuracy to 'feel' the difference...... Guess I will try to bounce this off Dennis, he will know for dead sure.

The car is programed to use 91. If it senses knock, it will retard the timing. If you use 92 or 93 it will run just like it does on 91. if you have a chip programed for a higer octane, then it needs whatever it is programed for. However, who is to say that when you fill up with 91, it is actually 91? Mabye the mix wasn't quite right, mabye some sediment from the storage tank got mixed in, mabye it's a winter mix with ethanohol in it. Better safe than sorry. Here in Oregon, I don't have a choice it's either 89 or 92. So, I use 92.

Minimum rating of 91 and you should be fine with the stock MM. I use amoco 93. The clear gas makes a differnce and I have no idea as to why.

There are many conditions that can lead to pre-detenation:
Octane
Heat
Spark Plugs
Poor Quality fuel
