View Full Version : Finally Got My Rear Spoiler

I finally got my rear deck lid spoiler installed yesterday. My local dealer, Elmhurst Lincoln-Mercury, did a great job of handling this. They ordered it, painted it, and installed it for me. I couldn't make up my mind about whether or not to install it when I took delivery of my 2004 Marauder fourteen months ago. Since then I've agonized about it. Should I? Or, shouldn't I? I could make a very good argument either way, both financial and about drilling holes in my deck lid. But I finally decided that I really did like the way it looked on the car. It makes like an exclamation statement on the car, a finishing touch, if you will. It is a very low-profile spoiler.

I hardly ever see another Marauder, and of those that I have seen (six or eight), only one had the spoiler installed. My only regret is that Mercury didn't think ahead enough to have installed this spoiler at the factory on all the 2003-2004 Marauders, like Ford did on my 1994 Taurus SHO (a little larger spoiler).

My next concern was the color/metallic paint matchability. I was told that after six months you cannot be sure of a good color match anymore. Well, let me tell you that they must have had some DTR paint cans laying around from around when my car was built on 04/19/04. Because both the color and the metallics are an absolute dead-on, exact match. I'm extremely pleased with that. The body shop manager, Mike Spilatro, personally handled the whole job for me. He did a good job, and did everything he said he was going to do!

I know that not everyone on this site likes or even wants the rear spoiler installed. But I feel its the only exterior add-on that is pretty much factory OEM, and doesn't look tacked on. Everything else is technically an add-on. The spoiler is an original Mercury factory part. Its only a small spoiler, as spoilers go, but it looks really cool! Now I just need to start saving money and working on the wife for some more mods, such as the Trilogy supercharger set-up. That would be the coolest of all the mods!

Thanks for your comments. I hope that you will have as good a luck as I've had getting this done, and enjoy your spoiler. I took some pics recently of the rear end of my Marauder from several angles. But they were pre-spoiler. I need to wash it up nice and take some new pics. Then I'll have to figure out how to post a picture. Ha!

Jim: I too would like to see some pix...I've only ever seen one DTR in person, and it didn't have a spoiler...I also agree that all MMs should have come from the factory with one...

rayjay: Go for it! You can save a few bux by ordering the spoiler from Ray "The Dealer" (vendor here), having it painted, and installing it yourself...it's really very easy, needing only common hand tools.

RF, I've thought of doing the install myself. I did a rear spoiler on my last car after having a "in the family" body shop paint it. Came out perfect with the template provided. Any issues I should be aware of?

The only issue is that "cold sweat" that breaks out when you go to drill that first hole in the trunk.

Here too...I installed mines about two months ago and I simple love it. I did it without the templates...I tapped the drill holes and threw caution to the wind. It came out perfect the first time. Now I enjoy the compliments.

I have a silver Marauder and when I installed the spoiler I also had "Marauder" printed on both sides and on the rear bumper in a light charcoal shade. Real understated very like I saw on one of the members photos a while back. Let me tell you I love it and I get easily 3x the compliments on the car. Last one was something like...

"Sheeeeaaat. That looks fast!!!!"

The SS are polished stainless steel, but there is a Bob White Inserts ( decals ) that I believe come in different colors ---

Check out the SS Inserts Photo Gallery. Scroll down and you will see a couple of Marauders. Just make sure that you are able to get by the first pink Mustang pic. If you don't make it past that pic. . . . . oh well. If you are able to get further down, you will see my DTR and another black MM.

Here is the link.

When I picked the car up couldn't tell in the direct sunlight but when I got home in the shadow of my garage.... whole different story. Needless to say I was livid and proceeded to have the mismatch taken care of. It's not noticable now unless I point it out now. But I know and that makes me a little peeved.

Not really...just follow the supplied instruction sheet and take your time...the first one we did took Mary and me about an hour and a quarter, but we worked really slowly. The templates for drilling the holes inside the truck lid can be a little confusing to orient properly, but once you get the hang of it, the rest is straightforward. I've since done 2 others, and they went a bit faster.

Unfortunatly they are still in the box :( . The way it looks, I'll probably be waiting until next year and going up to see Lidio.

KirtKirt,
I was worried about the SS inserts maybe looking a little tacked-on. But yours look absolutely great on your car! I have the same color, so mine should look just as good. The added plus being that this is also a relatively inexpensive addition. A lot of bang for buck, as they say.

JimI was kind of caught in the middle myself on them. I DO like the look of the SS inserts but I can't help but think I would rather have something a bit LESS obvious.

Anywhoo ...

After this thread was started ... I went ahead & ordered Bob White decals in reflective black(here already).

If ya' wanna wait & see how mine looks before you make a decision ... hopefully I'll get them on sometime this month.

I was shooting to do it this Friday night & so I could leave it in the garage all weekend if it was raining ...

However the trail of anti-freeze rolling down my driveway from under the Town Car(dreaded plastic intake I'm pretty sure) when I took out the trash a bit ago ... has me thinking this w/e might not be the best time to tie our other daily driver up around here .

So much for my heavy foot earlier this evening(apparently) ..... least it waited till after it was sitting & cooled down to make a mess(was fine when I parked it).

Jim-

Thanks:) I was hesitant at first, mostly because of the color of the car, but now I can't imagine not having them! You will be suprised at how subtle they actually are in many lighting situations.

The only issue is that "cold sweat" that breaks out when you go to drill that first hole in the trunk.

I'm about to experience that myself come warm weather when i install my spoiler on my DTR. Shouldn't be too bad though since i put a sunroof in one of my previous cars, and relocated the atenna on my truck, although both of those were paid for. Took me a week to get up the nerve to make that first cut on the car. After that there was no turning back.

Hmmmm, since this one is a long way from being paid for i'm allowing at least a month. Still have to get the spoiler painted and i've had it going on two weeks.
