View Full Version : Clever License Plates

I just thought I'd start a thread about clever, or not so clever... or vanity, custom license plates. I thought about this because a few months ago I saw a yellow Honda S2000 with a license plate that I won't forget.
The license plate was a combination of ones and uppercase I's so it looked like a bunch of lines -- "1I1I1II"
The guy must've been a computer geek because I've seen the same obfuscation in some chat environments. I's lower case L's 1's IlIl
zero's and O's together 0O0O... you get the idea. Basically, depending on the font, some characters just look too similar.

I would think something like that wouldn't be allowed by the DMV.

CONS-
I'm sure the cops trail him now just to figure out what it reads. And it's probably easier to search his plate up. I'd just search for any Okla plates for Honda S2000's and see which one looks like those letters.

This is kinda neat: http://www.dol.wa.gov/forms/420077.pdf

"When requesting either the number "1" or the letter "I", please specify which you desire. NOTE: Because of the similarity
of letters and numbers, 1's and I's and O's and 0's are considered the same. EXAMPLE: COOL (with letters) and
C00L (with numbers) are both considered the same word. We cannot issue single character personalized plates using
the letters "I" or "O" or numbers "1" or "0".
The Department cannot issue Personalized Plate choices that are:
• Sexual or vulgar in nature • Ethnic, lifestyle or gender slurs • Related to illegal substances
• Blasphemous • Misleading • Contrary to the Department's mission to promote highway safety"

I guess Washington state thinks about these things

Illinois won't let you mix numbers and letters, custom plates are either all numbers, all letters, or start with letters and end with numbers.

NY State will sell just about anything you want as long it is available. Plates are for two years and they charge an extra $25.00 per year + the registration fee.

If you have a special plate and also want an organization you are a member of on the plates the charge is $100.00 plus the regular fee for two years.

Clever license plates are cool...but....vanity plates:puke: ...that's why they call them vanity because the people who have them are soooo vain. (you know like the 1 initial plate)

I think clever license plates are cool....but vanity plates, such as one initial or something of arrogance shows alot of conceit and vanity. What do you think?

NO I'm too young to be envious....just the way I feel.....just wondered if anyone else shares this? I saw a cool new 'stang convertible with a " bleach blonde" driving it and license plates said "IMHOT" (Guess I should have left out that 1 initial statement) (Didn't think anyone would get so defensive regarding the "Lonely" 1 initial avatar. Maybe it was the :puke: . Anyway it just seems a little "look at ME.."I am IMPORTANT, or something like that.) Hope I apologized enough :bows:

Envious?? (Who are you defending??.) Heck NO! I'm too young to be envious. Here's my point: I saw a really tight 'stang convertible with IMHOT on the plates and there was a blond chick driving it. Am I envious of Her? No, but I do love the 'stang convertibles. Just my opinion.:bows: Sorry if I offended anyone with the 1 initial quote. Maybe it was the :puke: avatar. Whatever!!:alone: Sorry! Maybe I'll change my mind when I get my first car and have vanity plates on it but they will be "clever" not "arrogant" :)

I saw FRD SUX on a Cyclone pick-up truck, and it was a real plate. The other day I saw NEWSCHL on a banana yellow Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. The guy was fart-canning his way thru traffic, stereo blaring, hat turned backwards, trying to catch me. Finally he got beside me and turned off his stereo, kinda leaned his ear out to hear if I nailed it. I knew then it was ON, baby! I crushed him, absolutley crushed him to the next light!! Yeah, so much for 'new school'. I guess I should have put this in the kill section...

On my Durnago I have "SEAQSTRD" based on the name of my boat. Okay, so I know this one doesn't coordinate with the other plates, but I thought MORANGO looked funny.

Of course I have PNTHER, (panther chassis, black, blah blah) anyhow the funiest story I've heard about a custom plate...
My wife and mother-in-law were out driving and some conceited guy with a "vanity" plate on his sports car read "IM NO 1", he thinks it says "I'm number one". Well, my French speaking mother-in-law innocently reads it differently as "I'm no one" and seriously asked why that guy would have a plate that said that. I wish my m-in-law would have asked the a*****e that at a red light. I was LMAO when my wife told me the story.

My brother used to have an old VW bus tagged with DONT HIT. His landlord and he would play practical jokes on each other all the time. One morning he came out to find that an "S" had been inserted in the middle of his tag with electrical tape that matched the color of the lettering.

It can now be revealed. My vanity plate has been planned for years: 4RD
It will be a blue background with white letters.

I just ordered it today. I was surprised it was available in Michigan. I found it on a placemat in a restaurant out West (New Mexico?) many years ago. The mat explained how cowboys tried to think up unique cattle brands from herd owners names. Ergo "4RD" for "FORD" I will post a photo as soon as I can when I receive the plates.
