I'd check out Fujitsu's Lifebook. The P-Series is very lightweight, I have the older P5000 series. The P7000 series came out less than a year ago.

I've had no issues really except for Windows XP's service pack 2, but so did everyone else :)

It is very lightweight, and allows an extra battery to be loaded, giving you around 9 hours of battery life with both batteries. The primary battery gives you about 4-5. This laptop also contains slots for different types of multimedia, like SD cards, MMC, memory stick for sony, compact flash, and even has a thumbprint scanner.

All by itself, this weighs less than 4 pounds. I've heard nothing but praise for both the 5000 and 7000 series on cnet.com. I suggest getting the extra warranty to bring it up to 3 years (laptops are much harder to take care of, hardware-wise)

Laptops Incorporated (http://www.laptopsinc.com) deals with Fujitsu in the US, and so does Fry's electronics. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I just got a Dell 600m. The 700m is even smaller, but the keypad was too small to suit my fingers.

Check out the Sony Vaio T series. Very small and decent battery life at about 4-6 hours with power management. It can be configured with a DVD writeable and I think 1.5 gigs of RAM.

IBM also just came out with a Tablet PC based on their small laptop. I don't know the specifics but it might be something to look at.

I've had really good luck with Averatec notebooks (www.averatec.com). They are very inexpensive, very light, and pretty well-built. We have one of the 3200 series (12" screen and about 4 lbs) and one of the 6200 series. I'm a computer programmer, we have six or seven notebook computers around the house, and they all get a lot of use.

Averatec gets my vote as well......I'm on my second one and very pleased!!!

If you ever call them for assistance they are live on the phone in less than a minute and all of them speak ENGLISH!!!! ;)

We have had a Toshiba for a couple years. It has survived a couple or three drops to hard floor without a scratch or hiccup.

I've decided on the 6.9 pound $2700 MAC notebook. I despise the Windows XP operating system so much I'm going to the Mac as a protest. I'll probably end up hating Mac OS too as I must be getting too old to learn.

. I despise the Windows XP operating system.
I'll second that one!

W2K as good as it ever was.... downhill from there.
