Just got a new toy:

I had been wanting one of these beautiful old Grundig radios and found one in great condition.

What is the model? This dates from the 50's, no? (Professor Diamond Nutz notices the "Hi Fi" labels.)

I used to have one very similar to that, but the front glass was cracked. It sounded beautifull. I don't remember what happened to it.

I had a great one that I purchased back in 1960 (or 61). Worked great, until I had to replace tubes. You do know what tubes are, right? When tubes were no longer available, the set was just something that sat on a shelf taking up room.

Hope yours is new enough to have transistors and not tubes.

BTW, the British term for "Tubes" is "Valves",

My parents still have one. I think it's a little smaller though. We just got them a new radio that has the old look to it. Kinda cool. It even plays LP's.

I didn't understand why because I was in the 6th grade and waiting to meet the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. By the time I graduated grammar school, I wanted to meet the Rolling Stones in person, and my father was into another Halicrafter, one much more entertaining to him.

When he passed away in 1982, I cleaned out his radio stuff, and let it all go for "come get it". Had e-bay been around then, his stuff would have found a good home, maybe it did anyway?

No way I could trek all that back to Chicago from Winter Park, but liking radio today myself, I wish I had his stuff around.

Tubes (valves) are out there and available. There is a lot of hifi equipment still being made with tubes. Everything from tuners to CD players to amplifiers. I have even seen car amps that were powered with tubes.

The Grundig just arrived by UPS.

Nice condition even though I would have packed it better.

Powered up and all was in good working order!

Even the cool 'magic eye' tuning tube display works like new!

The optional remote for controlling the radio works too.
