Bourbon Tasting! ! !

Last night I had a very special invitation to a "Small Batch" bourbon tasting event in downtown Louisville at the Marriott.

This is the first time I had been involved in something of this nature and would highly recommend this to anyone who is a bourbon enthusiast!

The main speaker was Fred Noe. A Master Distiller and son to Booker Noe known for distilling Knob Creek bourbon as well as Bookers, Basil Hayden and Baker's to name a few. I was lucky enough to shake hands with the man prior to and after tasting his his fine bourbons. :bows:

There were about 200 people that attended this first time event held in Louisville.

All this talk is making me thirsty. I just so happen to have a fifth of that fine Knob Creek bourbon in the cabinet.:drool:

I got a personal tasting at the distillery in Lynchburg last year as an organizer of the charity bike ride that Jack Daniels sponsors. (The Ride to Jack & Back for the Mid-South MS Society) It was sweet.

Got to taste the raw liquor, then the charcoal-filtered stuff --- the BEST white lightning I ever tasted! Then we moved on to the aged Jack Daniels ... black label, single barrel and Gentleman Jack. It was an awesome event.

Also got to talk with the Master Distiller Jimmy Bedford. He also personally picked out a single barrel that was donated to the MS Society to sell for our fundraiser ... I picked up 2 commemorative bottles from the barrel for a cool $100. FYI, a barrel holds about 242 bottles, so we cleared a cool $12,000 from their donation. (A single barrel will retail for around $8,500)

Bedford even surprised us by donating a signed bottle, to be auctioned off, from his own "private label" barrel that was a gift to him from the distillery's owners (Brown Forman). What a class act.

The Single Barrel (94 proof) that I sampled was much darker than the other JD whiskeys. Six to seven year in the barrel left it a deep copper-red color. In the mouth it was much more intense, and far fuller in flavor. The grain, caramel, vanilla and charcoal flavors were wonderfully balanced, and it was clearly the best of the the three.

I wholeheartedly agree with the above reviewer.

The other night Freddy said: "98% of all bourbons are made in Kentucky. I don't know where the other 2% are made, but I don't drink them." :D

I wish I could have met his Dad. But from what I have heard, Freddy is just like him, . .

Strong speaker, sense of humor and loves Bourbon.

Burbons are very nice. Just a little in a glass, neat, no ice, swirl ..sniff and taste ....mmmmmm:D
