View Full Version : Engine light on!, P0430 Code

Hi;
My maruder just flicked on the engine light for the second time.
The first tome I reset it , I had run thru puddle and it came on, same code.
Well, its back, a P0430 code, from what I can gather it refers to the inefficiency of the Catalyst on bank 2 of the engine ( I am guessing drivers side rear sensor).
I am hoping for a quick fix at the dealer on Monday, but you never know what they will say when they see the Kooks up there.
Thanks for tuning in

Greg, the code is for the left catalytic converter. It is below it's minimum efficiency threshold. As soon as the dealer see's the aftermarket exhaust, they will void warranty on your exhaust and probably hit you up for diag charge. Since you have an xcal2, have the person you bought the tuner from get you a tune with the catalyst monitor turned off.

When you have mods, it's a good idea to stay away from the dealer unless absolutely necessary...

I saw this exact same problem on another MM with Kooks, and the same solution.
Scott explained to me that there's a reason there are two sets of cats on our cars. The first pair are "light-off" cats for the second pair. Running with only one pair of cats is eventually going to result in the cats reducing in efficiency until a code is thrown. Then, it's either replace them, or turn off the monitor.

if they are 4 way cats then 2 should do just fine.....however the above is correct, that code means the rear left downstream 02 is switching. meaning the cat on that side isnt doing anything...it will have to be replaced....its not a sensor problem....

My original Cat on the drivers side went bad, and I had kooks replace it
The replacement may be a slightly different model (different shape)
Any way I will look into having that particular test for catalyst efficiency turned off in the tune...
Thanks to all who took a moment to respond

Does this mean the 'cat' is getting plugged up with reduced flow, or not catalyze properly (or both)? If so, does the computer detect exhaust restriction or emmissions increase?

Fellow KOOKS owner here...did that on day one.;)

Most of the aftermarket tunes, especially for cars with exhaust mods, have the rear o2 sensors turned off. I suspect that they would work ok if the cats were bigger, even if there is only one on each bank. Many of the aftermarket exhaust systems (even on Mustangs) have the same issues, probably due to the undersize cats they use. The car should still pass the sniffer test at emission test time.

it doesnt necessarily mean they are clogging...just that they no longer have the ability to remove the waste gasses they are supposed to...when that happens the rear o2s switch along with the fronts...this tells the pcm there is a problem. the rear 02s are not suppose to switch like the fronts....

I've got a set of O2 sensor 'MIL' eliminators....they plug right in to the O2 sensor wiring. They have never been used.
I didn't need them because I've never had a 'MIL' with my Kooks and Cats.
'PM' me if you are interested in buying them.

^^^ what Joe Said. P.E.P. Sells them. From what I understand, the PCM is VERY sensitive (probably too much) when it comes to the Cats, and these Eliminators "numb" what the engine computer sees.
Good luck
Wes
