View Full Version : Do those "radar signs" make you speed up?

When you see one of those radar signs that clocks your speed and then tells you how fast you are going do you speed, do you adjust your speed to the speed limit or do you ignore them completely?

I speed up but only if I think that there are no LEO's watching. :)

I didn't put that in the option because, invariably, someone who speeds up even if there are cops around would question why it was there. :)

Who pays attention to non-speed limit/stop signs?

I adjust my speed and then look at my speedometer to see how accurate it is.

Every now and then when I'm on the interstate I use my stopwatch between the mile marker posts (always exactly one mile apart) to check the speedo. 55 mph takes 65 seconds to go one mile; 60 mph, 60 secs (duh); 65 mph, 55 secs.

The way I wear out rear tires I want to know what my speedo is doing regularly.

I adjust my speed and then look at my speedometer to see how accurate it is.That's what I usually do, so I guess the closest poll option is, slow to speed limit, but then sometimes I ignore them.

If its near a school in NYS, ya'll better be slowin down and watch for that flat top. 1st offense is $250 minimum and/or a 15 day all exspense paid vacation as a guest of the county. Since a less than upstanding citizen ran down a 8 year old girl infront of her house with her mother watching, its a really, really, bad idea to pass a school bus or speed in a school zone here. The real kick in the teeth is he was recently aquitted following a bench trial. :bs: :bs: :bs: :help: what has our justice system become :puke:

I would not advise anyone to do anything but obey speed limits in school zones during school hours.

Nothing is more valuable than the life of a child.

120 mph takes about 30 secs to travel 5280 feet :D
55 mph takes 65 seconds to go one mile; 60 mph, 60 secs (duh); 65 mph, 55 secs.

If I were an LEO, I would station myself by one of these things and use my own radar gun to check speeds. Not only would I get delibrate speeders, BUT I would also get individuals with radar detectors. As soon as they see the box, they know it's just a box, and speed up again and have no real way of knowing if there's other radar 'watching' them.

That's why when I see one I either ignore the box and watch out (since I don't normally go over the speed limit but 5mph) - or I slow to the desired range.

Some of the more expensive radar detectors have a count function.(Valentine one for example) not only tells you how many signals it is receiving but also gives a sound tone for each new one. The arrows will also tell where the LEO that is arriving to write you the ticket is coming from so that you can be ready to plead guilty.

Same in this state. There are varying rules for school zones here.
On is 'when children are present' another 'at all times'
another 'when yellow lights are flashing'.

I read an interesting little piece in the paper one day concerning these radar speed signs. Seems that one was placed on this residential street to try and discourage the neighborhood speeding problem. However, the local teenagers found it to be a great new game, trying to see who could get the highest reading from a standing start. Too bad they don't register E.T. as well as top speed.

...and I'd see you as an additional bogey with my V1, my Blinder M1 would jam you if you tried the whole laser thing and by the time you're done goin' "Huh?" looking at the error code on your gun and retrying to lock on me, I'm doing the limit and you're reading it on your lidar gun.

Trust me, Papa don't play around. You've got your work cut out for you if you aim to give me a ticket.

90% of the bozos slow down to 5 under when they see those things, not exactly a profitable spot to be sitting looking for the odd guy who gets why the thing's sitting there.

Smart guy would sit about a 1/2 mile down the street... Not that you'd catch me, but some smug ass who figures that's it's over is undoubtedly cruising back to 55 or 60 in a 45... :bandit:

Dude...You're blowing my scam. Icksnay...SergntMac - this was pretty cool - a very neat setup courtesy of Chicago PD - The sign showing your speed was shooting a K-band radar gun while the CPD cruiser further down the road was shooting an old-school X-band unit. Once passing the K-band it seemed that most drivers with detectors discounted the X-Band "door opener" signal and sped right up for the officer over the hill. A similiar setup in Michigan with 4 State and County cruisers had 11 vehicles waived over and waiting for their turn with the ticket pad when I drove by.

The Valentine unit is indeed a nice setup, but with Chicago traffic and kids in the car, it stays in the glove box and I stay within 5.

I generally slow down, most of the time they serve their purpose, as a reminder to me that I'm driving too fast (or too slow I guess if it's under the limit...).

But then again I usually only see them in residential areas. They're usually put there for a reason in my area. So if I'm speeding by one I need to reconsider that...especially if I'm near a school.

Not to mentioned one of these days they'll have camera's attached...

Mass. and Pa. are so busy putting radar emitting guns on traffic and const. signs on the interstates that you never know what is up ahead. They do a very good job of confusing traffic(go llike hell...slam on the brakes)( good for body shop and undertaking business)Of course Mass. has more than plenty of Troopers out and about, (including some who cheat worse that I speed but that is another story) while Pa. uses them to hide the fact that they only have 3 troopers on the payroll and they only have 2 radar guns. :) I have not run into the gun w/o a trooper on the interstate anywhere else but I don't think Pa. got the idea all by themselves. Oh, and yes I speed up except when in a residential area.

In Northern Maine occassionally during hunting season (up there all night every night) the stand by the road radar signs would get the chance to measure the speed of a 30.06 slug. Most of them didn't come close the getting the velocity correct.

Wow. Another poll goes down in the annals of MM.net history.

This one was quite a bit more evenly split than the Crown Vic Effect thread. Still, when I see these numbers I get the feeling that the guys here are a bit more roughish than the average motorists. :)

Great job, gang. Thanks for participating, commenting and voting.

Best,

Dan
