Okay, I spent the better part of my day bouncing from every single freekin chain parts store to as many local parts places as I could tolerate...I kept getting the same response from all, quote," Your car is so new that we dont have/cant find/have to order/Duhhh whatsa Marauder/only OEM thermostat."
:mad2:  :mad2:  Soooo...here I bring my angry, tired, disheveled butt to ask this very same question...I would like to purchase the best 180 degree thermostat possible for my three 2003 300a Mercury Marauders ... please give me the stock numbers, prices, all required information so that I may acquire them. Thank you for your help and I will now stop hammering on the thermo-nuclear devices I have strategically placed about the countryside....

Aftermarket parts number for a 180 degree thermostat that fits an MM: Carquest 32918 or Prestone 773180. Should cost less than $20.00.

Any benefit in going with a 170 degree stat?

I doubt it, we can now tell the cooling fan when to come on and go off with SCT tuning, years ago people used to say if you have a car running hot take the TS out, today that is absolutely wrong the car will run hotter. he reason is the watter is passing through the radiator so fast it does not dissipate the heat, if a car runs to cool the sensor such as ECT can effect fuel and and driveabilaty issues. Colder plugs and Stat can help but they only go so far, they can enhance the tune for a car especially if you are trying to get Max RWHP and a tune especially on the Dyno.

Running your engine below the proper temperature will greatly increase piston ring wear and possibly bore wear. The temp rating of a 'stat is the temperature it starts to open. If I recall correctly, a 190 'stat isn't fully open 'til 212 degrees. If Dennis says an 8 degree change is max, you can be sure there is no advantage going lower for street driving.

Ok Question here. Knowing how precise a thermostat is,(ya right). What possible benefit can 8 degrees cooler be. Thanks :D

I have tested a few thermostats and was surprised how accurate they can be. Any good shop manual includes the proceedure. I recall that the initial opening is so small it is difficult to observe in the boiling water but occured (in a good stat.) at exactly the calibrated temp. A good (detailed) engine rebuild should include testing even a new stat. to confirm correct calibration.
