Now, I know very little about what it takes to make 1/4 mile screamer ("add a supercharger") being the extent of it, and even less about making a car handle and brake well, but if you were given $54,000, how close could you make a Marauder perform to this?

OMG!!!!!

$87,000 for a Lancer???

How about buying a new Z06 Vette or a new Viper and having lots of gas money left to put high octane in the tank!

On second thought, I think that I will buy a highly modded $64,000 Yugo! :banana2:

Man, I thought that I was spending a LOT of money modding my Marauder...but that is **** ridiculous!!!

P.S. Some MM.net members have their Marauders running faster and handling/braking just as well as that EVO for significantly LESS than $87,000...

Funny, I read the same article and also wondered how a well-prepped Marauder would compare... should would be a funny lesson!

I don't think it's real meaningful to look at the prices on those things though; most of those cars are real cutting-edge machines, and the newest always costs the mostest.

That innovation costs money... and then everybody else benefits from the lower price... so I say let 'em spend it however they like!

I think that you are pushing the modding limits, as well as your wallet's limits, when you spend twice the car's MSRP cost in mods...

How fast could you make a Ford GT by spending $320,000 in mods???

Oh well...to each his own.

With a car like that, you could probably race @ Indy.Heck you could probably race anywhere!

For almost $90K, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to build a heck of an MM :D But, I've gotta think you'd still have trouble in the twisties... Afterall, we still have about 1200lbs more car, compared to the little Evo. That's gotta hurt doing the roundy-rounds, but with the big budget, could easily be made up for on the straight aways.

Here's all that went into it:

Price as tested: $86,788 (base price: $79,476)
MODIFICATIONS (all parts made by HKS USA except as noted):

Engine and transmission: GT3037S turbo kit, $6295; 2.3-liter prototype stroker kit, $4965; Cusco front and rear limited-slip differentials, $2980; Spec-R titanium exhaust, $1950; GD Clutch Max twin-plate clutch, $1950; R-type intercooler kit, $1575; F-CON V Pro engine-management system, $1395; S-type oil cooler, $1000; 680cc fuel injectors, $700; 272 intake and exhaust camshafts, $670; EVC boost controller, $599; fuel-rail kit, $475; Kansai Service carbon intake duct, $390; cam gears, $380; 1.6mm head gasket, $265; valve-spring set, $240; adjustable fuel-pressure regulator, $195; Super Mega Flow intake, $140; Ralliart engine mounts, $100; labor, $9100

Suspension: Hipermax coil springs with 2-way-adjustable shocks, $3225; Kansai Service anti-roll bars, $550; labor, $255

Brakes: Endless 6-piston front kit, $3580; Endless 4-piston rear kit, $2640; labor, $420

Wheels and tires: Volk Racing TE37 wheels, 9.0-by-18-in, $2600; Yokohama Advan Neova AD07 tires, 265/35ZR-18, $1128; labor, $80

Body and interior: Bride Brix seats, $1972; Varis carbon-fiber hood, $1890; Varis carbon-fiber trunk, $840; Kansai Service high-mount rear wing, $770; Ralliart mirrors, $600; Carbing carbon-fiber front defuser, $550; Charge Speed wide front fenders, $380; Kansai Service carbon-fiber rear wing, $320; labor, $530

I wish I had 2 of them. I'd bang them into each other repeatedly at high "drift" speeds until I got bored, which would probably take a while.

Fast yes, corners well yes...but could you take a 1000 mile trip in it and still walk when you got out after the ride?

In a word... No.

The Lancer is not roomy, is not comfortable and is not classy. I test drove one (was bored and killing time). I got out of that silly little box, with my back as crooked as a 3 dollar bill.
