Can anyone tell me who or which site offers Satellite Imagery with the BEST close-up resolution?
Even if I have to pay...........

Google Maps is pretty good but falls just short...............

http://earth.google.com/

Some images/areas are more detailed than others because of the image that's been stored. Seems metropolitan areas have more defined images. It's a cool tool. It may not be any better than Google Maps but is very easy to zoom in and out and change locations. Great add-ons to overlay the map, such as roads, restaurants, hotels, etc. There is a free version and two pay versions.

In line with the question and answer, I have question myself: Is there a page that google offers showing when their image database was last updated either in whole or in part, and/or when another update(s) is/are expected?

Jefferson-MO, I would go to the source...DigitalGlobe, at http://www.digitalglobe.com/ This company shoots at 1 METER resolution when there's a need/request for this resolution. This is also the company the GOOGLE has the agreement with. If there isn't any 1 METER, than what your seeing on GOOGLE is 15 METER resolution with in that area. At DigitalGlobe's website you can search their archives to see if they have coverage over the area you want, if they don't have it you can order a shot.

If it's hurricane and other geographical event radars you want...

This site is really good. Zoom right into the eye. See a ship in the water...:P

Check out the county govt websites too, sometimes they have better pics from planes?.?, or purchased satellite time?. They tack the links onto tax parcel maps links etc. Anyhow it's worth a shot.

Here's one from my county:
