I love to see this, when people put cars away like this one. Its a 1996

Chevy Impala SS. I was only 14 when they came out, and def. could

not afford one. Im so happy the Marauder came out, but I still have a soft

spot for the Impala, the REAL impala. 3,000 miles with the plastic still on her

seats...

The final sale price will likely be less depending on the vehicle's actual condition, popularity, type of warranty offered and local market conditions.

I miss mine every day, but I like the Marauder more. The SS was as nimble as a Wooly Mammoth, but had low end grunt like no other! The MM is much more nimble and agile, and fun to drive!

Speaking of Impalas, I stumbled upon this one on Ebay yesterday:

Nothing like a tire shredding LPE small block powering a sinister looking black sedan. Very sweet indeed. :bows:

I love those cars too, especially the dark cherry color. I never bought one because they are so expensive even used. I'll bet they go for over $20,000.

I, too, am happy that the American Muscle Car has made a comeback. I figured we were being taken over by ricers....but now with all the companies making true muscle cars again, I feel better being young in this era. I used to wish I grew up in the 60's and 70's with all the Cudas, Mustangs, and Firebirds...but now they are all better, faster, agile, and last longer. Truly glad to be an American.

If my memory isn't totally gone, Impala SS's (which started in 1961) were nothing more than a trim package for many years until they added the 396, 409, and 427 names. 1962 introduced bucket seats (I don't think the 61 had buckets, but I could be wrong).

Ford countered with the 500XL in 1962, but the 500XL was always a dress up package.

Chevy seemed to have the performance edge back then in acceleration, but Ford had the nicer interiors and did well on the ovals.

Yeah, you younger guys would have loved it back then. Every night (well, almost every night), we would meet at the diner and talk cars for hours.

Numberwise, the Gen Motors cars/fans (Vettes, GTOs, 442s, Skylarks, Chevelles and Impalas) far outnumbered the Ford/Merc and the MOPAR guys, at least where I grew up (Hudson County, northern NJ).

MOPAR finally got some respect at the dragstrip with the 413 engine in 62(?). HEMIs were in regular MOPAR sedans even in the late 50's, but weren't known as animals, yet. None of us at Englishtown, NJ, could believe that a 4 speed 409 Impala could be beat by an automatic Plymouth/Dodge 413! Blasphemy!

Yeah, miss those days.

When this site started, a fellow posted one, a '96, for sale with much lower miles than that. (less than a 1000 IIRC)
He wanted a premium price, about as much or more than a new Marauder, but as I recall, didn't get it.

I don't necessarily agree that the Impala pave the path for the MM. I think that Impala owners would like to think that but that's just fanaticism talking.

It would be good to see who really did come up with the "big black performace sedan" concept in the first place. To me, those would be the ones to give credit to.

Best,

Dan

The 1994-1996 Impala SS did pave the way for the Marauder. It may not have been the first big black performance sedan, but it was the first and only one that was sucessful in recent history.

Even Mercury's initial promotional material gave credit to the Impala SS, including a table that compared the specs on both cars.
