I'm looking to get my sister a remote start for her '00 VW Passat. Anyone have expereince with these things and recommend/avoid any particular model of Remote Start? The car has RKE from the factory and no aftermarket anything.
She lives near the twin cities so if any of you up there can recommen a shop to install as well, that would be super.
Thanks

There are interfaces you have to buy for it to work(bypass stock security if equipt). They usualy don't tell you this 'till after you paid for the kit. Mine ran about $500 if you go the full out alarm route. Beleve worst buy has good prices on buy and instals but they sent me to another shop for parts(transponder) and I eneded up getting it done there instead. Check local laws to see if she will get ticketed for have an unatended running vehicle if she started it while walking out the mall with friends and a cop hapens to drive by. I had flashing corners or solid corners when remote started option. I opted for solid cause thet looks like you are possibly in the car where as flashing is screaming "Pick Me" to a theif. Are you getting full out or something as a add on like bullguard? Was there a factory option and was it cheaper? I know mazda remote start was cheap but ran you past a viper alarm price once they factored in per hr labor cost.
*edit cause it's too early for me!

A few things...
1. $500 is rediculous...
2. remote start does not have to bypass factory security
3. you are not at more risk for theft, unless someone did yours wrong. Remote start starts the car, leaves it locked and if you touch the brake or gas to get the car in gear it will shut down unless the key is in
4. you can get a simple remote rtart module for $100

I have the remote start on the merc and it has the brake and hood opening antigrind features. I was saying it will attract attetion to a thief cause it's an unatended vehicle. Just cause they may not know remote start won't let you drive off doesn'yt stop them from causing damage to your car trying. In D.C. it's 11 yr olds stealing cars and even hijacking at gunpoint. my windows are tinted and everyone keeps saying when i remote start they assumed I was in it untill i walked up. yeah I know the price was high but I didn't wanna wait till I got to d.c. with a "crown vic with chrome rims" and not have an alarm for it(car bought and registered in san antonio). hell at the hotel in sat they were breaking into cars left and right so I felt 2way paging was needed.

Try this remote start:
http://www.designtech-intl.com
You can buy them at Advance Auto Parts for around $80 - $90 bucks. I also saw them in B.J.'s once. Looking at the website you will need a bypass module about $20 - $40 bucks. You may also need an extra key for the bypass module (got mine on eBay). The website and their tech support is excellent. How do I know all this you ask??? I installed one in my MM this summer. Took about 16 hours. I did route, solder and heat shrink tube all the connections so it looks factory. Even wired it into the lights and door locks so I don't have to carry around 2 remotes. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

I had a Viper remote start installed on my PT for $240.00. It has a 1000 ft range on it. Look around for the best deal.

I just checked, 00 Passat has an imobilizor. You will need both keys when it goes to the dealer, to program the transponder. Talk to other people who have had them installed in your area. Do not look for the lowest price. Look for the best value. Make certain they solder, no t-taps, no scoth locks, no twist and tape. Warrany, module should have a life time warranty, shop should warranty there installation as long as you own the car. Do not get Bulldog brand. Make cerain that you get anti-grind,tach input anjd hood interface. More questions pm for phone number.
