paint brakes?

Anyone considering powdercoating or painting their calipers? just thinking that painting the calipers red would go rather nicely with those gorgeous rims. Problem is, I wish I had a small stencil of the mercury logo that I could paint on the caliper, that would really be sweet. Anyone have any thoughts?

WOW---I just left the body shop today and the guys said they will paint my calibers black with high heat resitant paint cause it looks like a pigeon pooped on them from the factory--WOW---thanks guys--I will tell them to paint them RED instead of BLACK--DUH!!!!!! I shouda though of that as well....these guys in the body shop are willing to do anything I ask to this car to make me happy--( do I need to tell you why) -so come on with more ideas guys....still have pleanty of time to have them incoroporated into the car...lets hear them..

OH YEAH, I bought the powder coat kit (red) from a mail order paint mag. This is on my list when the weather up north improves enough to bring out the backup car. The MM will be on jacks for several days to complete this process. I'm psyched.....

the more that i think about it the less I want to powder coat. Looks like to do it right it costs alot of money, and Hi temp paint applied well and with enough time and effort will have the same effect. Looks like I'll be digging into this soon, perhaps tomorrow, I'll let you all know how it goes.


BTW, are the calipers a pain to remove?

This system offered to me, you do not. Maybe I gave the wrong impression. I want to do all 4 at the same time, thus jack stands. And they have to dry 24 hours, thus alternate car. Total cost=$38.

Besides, my alternate is TOOOO cool

Hmmm. I was thinking about this too. Eastwood Auto Supply sells a caliper coating kit for $50 that includes a cleaner/ degreaser and application brushes that make this whole thing look easy.

The instructions say that the stuff is dry and ready for a second coat if needed after 15 minutes. Sounds real easy except for the color choice. They offer a variety of goofy colors like yellow & purple, but I'm kinda torn between red and Ford blue. Either way I may have to change my Bob White's to match.

Hmmmm, interesting. Remember the Bullitt Mustangs have red Brembo calipers, but the new SVT Cobra in the showroom when I picked up my car last night didn't have noticeable calipers. A godshead white stencil on whatever color would look cool on a Marauder.

I thought it was cheaper. Anyway, this is the kit I purchased.
And true, alot of colors to choose from...enough to make EVERYONE happy. :)

rurumon - The calipers look good. The only thing I would recommend is using a car cover to prevent overspray for getting on the car. John

I thought the Eastwood kit was brush on. It looks like rumson used a spray. Rumson, details man, give us the details!

By the way, I heard RF is going with the purple that Eastwood sells.

I just used some hi temp engine paint I got from advanced auto. I usually gave it about 15 minutes between coats, 3 coats total. Left it around for the night to let it dry.

BTW, anyone know of any hi temp decals of the mercury logo/ godshead that I can stick on the calipers? I considered using a stencil, but my artistic talent is lacking.

Hi guy's, that I would tell you all what I did with my calipers. I used VHT Red Caliper paint and alot of masking tape. But they do look good, to me any way.

Speaking of Calipers. Yesterday while looking at the new 300B Marauders at the local dealer I noticed something. The brake Calipers seemed to be painted black instead of the light gray my 300A has.

I am reluctant to use spray paint.....high temp or not. I once saw a Honda in a parking lot that had calipers that were clearly spray painted.

Not having done so, but I believe the powder coat gives a more smoother, deeper coating.

Are you sure you are going to be powder coating yours? Powder coating would involve taking the calipers apart and baking them in an oven

Correct me if I am wrong, but the Eastwood kit appears to be a two-part, epoxy type paint.

That's the way it looks to me. Looks easy, and I don't see why it would need to dry overnight. A few good, hard stops oughta heat things up enough for a nice cure on the epoxy.

Nope, they are not four piston, they are two piston PBR calipers and 14 inch two piece rotors up front. Car and Driver said the following ". With that kind of firepower, it's no wonder upgraded front brakes are part of the package. The Baer/PBR brakes feature 14-inch rotors, and two-piston calipers provide firm brake-pedal feel and fade-free 171-foot stops from 70 mph. " I cant find the decrease in stopping distance, but it was dramatic, and fade free stops from a 4000 lb car are fantastic.

Brakes fit under stock rims... and not that much $$$$... around 1,000 bucks for calipers, rotors, pads, stainless steel brake lines. The brakes stop much better than stock, and look totally cool!!!!

Now, i dont mean to flame or anything here, but isnt 1000 bucks a tad steep for 2 piston PBR's for only two sets of wheels? I mean, PBR calipers are factory equipment on alot of cars out there, are our calipers PBR? they look frighteningly similar to the front calipers on my GT, and those were PBR. I would think that for that moola I would at least be getting 4 pistons. Out of curiosity, are there any 4 piston kits out there? i wonder how much they run.

Seems that with a bigger set of rotors, some hawk pads and some SS lines, our stock brakes would perform nearly as well as the baer brakes, though distinctly less cool.

Marty---I only have zinc washed slotted rotors on the rear to match the appearance of the fronts, calipers are stock.

As for the PBRs up front, I am not totally familiar with the type of caliper, except that they are much larger than stock and apparently haul the marauder down faster than our original brakes. In fact Car and Driver in the same issue tested an 03 cobra, and a Gulstrand Corvette, my marauder stopped from 70mph in 171 feet, the Gulstrand Corvette stopped in 172 feet, and the 03 cobra stopped in 179 feet... granted the Rx-8 and G35 stopped in around 164 feet, but they weigh 3500 and 3000 lbs respectively. So the system on my car seems to haul us down nicely. A 4400 lb car that stops faster than a z06 mod vette is pretty sweet.

I think the calipers offer a substantially greater pad volume than stock.

Is it worth it for a grand... seems to me it is. If you price the corvette calipers, pads, add two piece rotors that are 14 inches as well as ss lines a grand doesn't seem that bad. And I am fairly positive that the calipers from Baer are not the same as on the mustangs....

I don't work for Baer, I just like the brakes... if someone finds a four piston set up for a grand from a repetuable company let me know.... I would be curious to see the benefits.

That's a reasonble price 'cause Brembo's for a Cobra are about $1400 and that's just for calipers rotors pads and lines......


SHM sells a 6 piston 14" front brake setup for $4295.00 and it won't fit under the stock wheels.............SERIOUS brakes!

Wow! i had no idea those two pistons could stop that well. In fact, it just doesnt sit right. I mean, the brakes on the vette are at least the same size, it doesnt make sense that a car thats 800 lbs heavier stops shorter. Do you see what I mean? So this leads me to believe that car and driver has their head up their bums again, supplying us with strange nonsensical data.

As for Car and Driver, who knows how reliable their test data is, I know the car is quicker than 13.1 in the 1/4. But, as far as a baseline goes, one would assume that they use the same testing methods on all cars, so one would hope that you would be able to compare results. But then again...

That being said, I have driven this car a lot now, and this car has great barkes I believe it does stop fairly closely to a Z06, but that's just my aXX meter.

Do I think the brake system is worth a grand, yes, will everyone agree with me... nope. All I can say is drive a car with the Baers and see what you think.

If anyone has any questions about my brakes I am more than glad to answer.

For the record I wanted 4 piston calipers, but couldn't swing the extra dough... I am happy with these though.
