I have heard of some NASCAR personalities that hold events where they allow fans to drive thier race cars. Does anyone have more details on this?

Thanks

Charlie,
Here is a link to one such program .... Note the one at Richmond International Raceway (RIR). That's probably the closest for you ... although there might also be a program at Dover, DE :D

There are certain tracks that have what they call The NASCAR Experience. Or the Richard Petty Experience. I may not have the wording exact. There are several packages available. One type of package will have a driver take you around the track and you are the passenger. And another will allow you to be the driver, alone. I think the event may vary depending on the track. Some tracks require you to follow a lead car when you drive solo. I've heard others do not require this. My brother did it a few years ago at Daytona, he drove solo, followed a lead car, but could not exceed 140 mph. As a passenger they take you faster. It was because of the 140mph restriction that I didn't try it while visiting Vegas Motor Speedway. I've done 130 in a '95 mustang Cobra on the track at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Now, I have heard, they are allowing speeds up to 170 mph. But I don't know if that is solo or with a driver. I think the packages range from several hundred dollars up to a couple thousand dollars depending on how much time and how fast you wanted to go. Speed costs money, you know! You can probably find out more info on the NASCAR website.

I have done the Richard Petty Driving Experience at two tracks. I did the ride-along program at the Disney track first, followed by the actual driving program, and this past October I drove on the Daytona track.

It is true that they won't let you go 200mph, but I hit top speeds in the 140's at both tracks. Both were a blast to do. The Disney track is smaller and is a tri-oval, so you get to go into sharper turns and get on and off the gas more often. Daytona is awesome because of the high banked turns.

Even if you do the ride-along program, it will give you a very different outlook on Nascar racing. The drivers enjoy giving you a thrill, even before you actually get on the track. It's a blast to do. . . . go for it. :banana2:

I have done the Petty ride-a-long at Lowes Motor Speedway here in Charlotte. The driver told me that we were doing 170 mph. Felt like 270. Lowes is high banked and the sensation going through the turns is unbelievable. Gives you a new respect for the drivers that do this lap after lap just inches from another car. :banana2:
