LOVELAND, Colo. - A man trimming trees was killed after he apparently was pulled into a wood chipper, police said.
The tree-service employee died Wednesday while he and a co-worker were cutting branches at a Loveland residence, Police Sgt. Rae Bontz said.
"It appears he was pulled into the chipper," Bontz said. He described the death as an industrial accident but released no other details, saying police were investigating.
After the accident, the man's partner, who was cutting branches from a bucket on a hydraulic lift, ran to the house where they were working, and a resident called 911. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police did not release either man's name. Police Chief Luke Hecker said the victim was experienced at his work.
The Larimer County coroner and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration also are investigating.

I don't know but I remember a farmer back home in Maine who was pulled into his corn chopper and chopped and years later in upstate NY a young girl got her coat caught in the power take off on the tractor that was running the silage chopper. She wasn't chopped but the coat instantly wound around the spinning shaft and tore both of her arms off at the shoulders. She lived and learned to use artificial arms. She was lucky in her misfortune as she would have been beaten to death spinning around the shaft if her shoulders had been stronger. Dam how did I get into this? Yikes. Dennis:(

Industrial accidents are no laughing matter unfortunately. I remember a guy with 28-years experience who was killed while he was working alone in a manure crusher at The Andersons in Maumee, Ohio. No one can ever say what actually happened, except that he was caught in the crusher's teeth feet first and killed by being slowly ground through the machinery. (Think really slowly, like 10 minutes or more from start to finish.)

If you really want sobering experiences ... read a few of these from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/face/whatsnew.html

You can follow each description to a detailed examination of the accident such as this one which is similar to the one I described above: Farmer Fell Into Auger of Manure Spreader While Scraping the Tank - Wisconsin. http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/face/stateface/wi/03wi001.html

Or this one: A Bowling Facility Worker Died When He Was Caught in a Pinsetter Machine - Oklahoma http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/face/stateface/ok/01ok10_13_01.html

Or this one: 52-year-old Female Janitor Died as a Result of a Vapor Flashback While Using Flammable Lacquer Thinner to Remove Carpet Glue From Concrete Basement Floor. http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/face/stateface/mi/04mi130.html

After the summary, skip down to the investigations. And yes, they usually have pictures or diagrams of the incident.

On June 14, 2003, a 20-year-old male Hispanic tree trimmer was killed when he was pulled into a wood chipping machine. http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/face/stateface/nj/03nj042.html

As the victim was feeding a load of branches into the chipper, he used his foot to push the branches into the hopper. A section of the tree top caught his shoe, and the machine pulled the tree and his leg into the machine. A co-worker quickly reversed and shut down the chipper, but it was too late to save the victim.

Ouch!

I keep looking to see if there's one I haven't seen before. (Got tired of all those farmers killed by flipping their tractor's over on top of themselves, but whoa!)

Going out with a bang!
A 16-year-old youth working as a camp counselor was fatally injured when a cannon he was attempting to fire exploded and burst into pieces. This cannon had been used during evening flag ceremonies at the camp for about three years. http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/face/stateface/or/03or020.html

When using the buddy system, make sure the other guy knows how to swim or your co-workers will at least point to where you went down.
Two male Hispanic laborers drowned after a canoe capsized on a golf-course pond. Victim 1 was working with another laborer trying to sink some tires that were floating on the pond. Neither was wearing personal floatation devices. Victim 1 was the only person in the area who had a radio, and while he left it on the shore, none of the co-workers on shore knew how to use it. One of the co-workers ran to the equipment shed where another employee with a telephone notified emergency services.

The EMS providers arrived within several minutes after receiving the call. Due to the worker’s fear and the inability of workers and responders to communicate effectively, divers began searching the south side of the pond. The co-workers all spoke Spanish and only a few spoke English, so when a co-worker was located who could communicate with the deputy, the sheriff department learned that the victims had not gone into the water on the south side, but rather on the north side. The deputy and two other divers were then sent to the north side. Both victims were soon located, resuscitation efforts were started and both victims were transported to a nearby hospital. Both were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Lift with your legs next time!
The victim was a 48-year-old Caucasian male farm owner who died as a result of crushing injuries sustained while attempting to load a dairy cow onto a trailer.

He could have used a snorkel
Bulldozer Owner/Operator Drowns While Trying to Repair a Pond. As the operator dug a trench through the earthen dam, a section at the top collapsed sending sludge into the trench. The water/sludge mixture filled the cab of the bulldozer, trapping the operator inside. When the owner/operator did not return home as expected, his wife called the pond owner. The pond owner and the operator’s wife searched the pond area for the bulldozer operator. They found the water-filled trench next to the pond, but not the bulldozer or the operator. After arriving at the scene, EMS contacted a diver who then found the bulldozer submerged in the water with the decedent inside.

Farming is a very dangerous profession. We have had a number of fatalities in our county involving PTOs and one very sad one where a young girl went through a spreader.
