Hello salty veterans..the FNG here. I had fun with an 03 CV Sport for two years, added a few mods and sold it to a Ford gear head for not much less than I paid for it. Recently found an 04 in SBirch with hot seats and 7500 miles, dickered for a month but couldn't get the guy under 24K. I suppose I overpaid bit but I ain't getting any younger and took the plunge. Besides, my searches show prices holding and numbers shrinking for these beasts.
When I installed the K/N fipk cold intake on the CV I noticed an impressive improvement in overall performance. Now K/N says their dyno test shows about 17 hp boost on the MM with this. Don't know about all that but what results have the members had with this mod. I know the stock MM airbox is improved flow over the CV so is this worth the $260???
(FYI--if you like a touch of color to offset the monochromatic paint, 1/4 inch pinstripe fits perfectly in the grove on the body side moldings. I had a deep red on my silver CV, had lots of compliments, decided on black with my silver MM)

If you look at the Dyno data provided by K&N, the 17.32 HP gain is way up there in the RPM range (5,675). I did the FIPK as my 2nd mod (Borla mufflers first) and must say if it's just for the HP increase and nothing else, may not be worth the spend. I like the look of the entire kit. This was an additional factor in my purchase.
In all probability, you could probably get near the same HP results with just the drop in filter (K&N PN 33-2272) and some holes drilled in the air box than with the entire kit.
Tis only my 2 cents worth.

In addition to an air intake, consider adding a tune with xcalibrator2 from one of our site sponsors. Makes a noticeable improvement in driveability under all conditions, and some more horses when you step on it.

I admit my thread title was confusing, but I just wanted some opinions on the K/N cold intake replacement for the stock intake. I really don't know what the modified MM boxes are but thanks anyway

You might also want ot look at a JLT (one of this site's vendors). The JLT is cheaper than the K&N.

Horsepower increases depends on where in the rpm range you look, however I assure that you WILL NOT see a 17 hp PEAK increase with K&N; or anyone elses airbox for that matter.
I provided you with a before/after DOCUMENTED dyno results with just an airbox change, however it is not K&N so ignore if you only have an interest in K&N. AIRBOX_DYNO_RESULTS (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=14370)

Smokie has some legit results to work with. IMHO, the K&N is a high quality product, likewise the PHP air box married to the Metco bellows. Both will deliver remarkable improvement in your drive, but it's also my humble opinion that dicing up the difference in HP gains, is taking the wrong approach.
Buy one of them, and enjoy your drive. Either way, you won't be disappointed.
