The next 19 days will be tense on the assembly line at at the Ford St. Thomas plant.
Ford Motor Co. has confirmed it will make a long-dreaded announcement about restructuring Jan. 23, along with its fourth-quarter and full-year earnings.
Ford is expected to close as many as 10 North American factories and eliminate 25,000 to 30,000 blue-collar jobs. Some auto analysts say Ford's Canadian operations are unlikely to escape the cutbacks.
Canadian Auto Workers officials say the St. Thomas plant is strong enough to survive the restructuring. Last year, Ford announced a $300-million US, three-year investment in the plant.
The St. Thomas plant produces the full-sized Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis sedan. Because of declining sales, production at the plant has been scaled back in recent years. MacDonald said the assembly line will be idle for one week a month until June.
