Too good looking to be true. Dodge will screw it all up before it comes to production. Happens to all of the cars. Happened to the mustang too. Concept was spot on - then they ruined it.

If this concept car is supposed to be on display at the Detroit car show, that means the actual item exists. Interesting. Eagerly awaiting any photos from the MCM crowd.

This little item also caught my interest... if they made a Pontiac version, well... you know... ;)

Is it me or is there a very good looking similarity? Like the PT and the HHR.

Well, the whole short deck long hood thing was pretty much a fixed detail of the pony car of the 60s/70s, so I can't see too many styling liberties being taken on a retro pony car nowadays.

The 2005 Mustang is very close to it's concept.

Come to think of it, the Thunderbird was too.

But Ford should have built the '49 concept as a production vehicle

That Camaro is much better looking than the challenger. I agree, a Pontiac version would be best.

If you take a 70's Challenger and a 70's Camaro/Firebird you will see that there were similarities there too.

Nope Slim, A 70 and up Camaro's(second gen) were more an aero look than what the Callenger was. Now if you said a first gen Camaro and a 70 Challenger then I would agree.

Yes i understand the "pony-car" image. Just if ya really look at the two of them it's kinda funny how they both "seem" to have the exact same roofline characteristics. Almost the identical hood, save for the "cowl bulges"(and I use that loosely). The doors look swappable. Save for the front and rear fascias, better yet lop the front and rears off, cause the only thing distinguishing the two is the sharper body crease and quarter panel rise in the Camaro.

I would gladly take either one, and make sweet love to the gas pedal with my 10 inch....right shoe.

Man, I like the new Challenger. Bumping to the 6.1 hemi and a six speed is big leap over the Charger. Camaro is nice to see coming back as well, but I too would prefer the Firebird instead.

My $ would go towards a Challenger thus far.

Right. So far, we have some preferences for a Firebird over a Camaro... so, GM will most likely NOT produce one.

I hope nobody gets excited over the Camaro as well, 'cause then GM's going to have to abandon that project too!

Hope not. I'm hoping Pontiac produces a true retro GTO, and brings back the Firebird/TA along with the Camaro. :)

There is a nice write up and several pics in MotorTrend, January 2006 issue, beginning on page 36 on the new Challenger. :D

An upfront editorial speculates whether Daimler-Chrysler will build them and it seems that they may be having some difficulty in making a "business case" -- read making a profit. I guess they don't have a clear cut idea of how saleable the Challenger is and still keep it competitively priced with GM and Ford.

The MotorTrend website (inside the "Future Vehicles" section) has a place to provide input on the Dodge Challenger and they plan to send to the D-C execs. Nevermind .... I was all over their site and couldn't find it !!!

Apparently, that Camaro concept is real and will be announced in Detroit very soon. Supposed to be a 2008 or 2009 model. I saw a pic of that red car on the turntable and other shots, courtesy of a Road and Track video. VERY nice. 400hp and 6.0l... that means LS2. The frontal shot is just plain MEAN.

Video shot tonight (1-7-06) at the GM Heritage center, shows a video screen running a promo for the new Camaro.

Hey Mercury! How about a Shelby Mustang based Cougar! Hide away head lights, sequential turn signals, and loads of torque!

It's probably too soon for another Cougar. They'll probably wait for the stench of their last Cougar to leave before they attempt another.

On the bright side, the Challenger was said to be one of the only "operational concepts" on the floor. You could drive it away. Generally a good sign that it WILL actually be produced!

I hope so. What do they (Chrysler) have to lose, they have not had a "pony" car since '74 and their building it on an existing LX platform??

.........

Don't get too excited. While not certified for the road, the Marauder convertible could be driven away too. So could many many others that were never produced.

Looks more like the cuda, than the challenger, especially from the back, but they don't make plymouths anymore, so they had to call it something.

The scuttle Butt is that the Challenger is pretty much a sure thing...hope that's true! The one at the autoshow was one of the few concepts that was completely driveable...a good sign towards production.

The pictures in Car and Driver showed a pistol grip shifter. I always thought that looked cool.

rauder775
01-14-2006, 05:57 PM
Yes, "modern Pistol grip", nice touch. I also saw that the hood scoops are actually functional "butterfly" type that presumably are activated by the driver, weather permitting...too cool! Even the original Challengers did not have functional hood scoop opennings...unless you took the block plates out.

About the Camaro, Is everyone missing this? 2008 is the 100 year aniversary of GM. Ford brought us the GT for their celebration and GM has to bring something the Camaro is the only thing that has a chance of making it to porduction by 2008 and that would have public interest. GM will be sandbagging there new models in 2006 and 2007 to have some hype for 2008! Not a good thing but hey it's GM. The Camaro concept is nice but the one they are showing is only that, a concept. The interior will never make production like that and the rear-end could use alot of work before prodution. The rear seat in the Camaro concept is worthless but the Challenger looks bigger than the Mustang and they took 4" off the wheelbase of the Charger to make the Challenger. I love the current Mustang from the inside and the outside, too bad I don't fit in the car (long legs bad). Maybe the Challenger will be better I have already said that a Magnum RT is my next used car.

I assume you've sat in the new Mustang......The new Mustang has a lot more driver leg room than the previous Mustang, I fit in it fine.

For me, if they build the Challenger as they've shown, I'll buy it! Just love the retro thing, the closer to the original the better. And who thought I'd have a chance at a NEW hemi Challenger??

About the Camaro...

What I've read is that the 21/20 wheel tire combo is definitely out (GM is gonna want this car to compete with the Mustang in sales numbers, and no way are Camaro owners gonna put up with no spare tire, not to mention, they'll probably have a V6 version), thankfully that interior is gonna be reworked (I hate those rectangular console gauges), and the belt line will likely be lowered. The proportions will likely stay close, as the design cues. I'm not real keen on the exhaust tips, and the tail lights are feh.

I predict the LS2 will be the standard engine in a Z28 optioned Camaro, and an SS version with the LS7. If Chevrolet builds the SS version with the LS7 and the 6 speed manual, I'm buying one. (Loaded up with Onstar, XM, Bose premium sound, the works.)

Those big wheels are a liability in Michigan, with our bad roads. You could fold up a 20" wheel every 100 feet on 8 Mile.
