I wish I was headed out there.
Are you planning on bidding on anything?
Have a great time.

I'm having withdrawals. At this exact time last year, I was on the airplane headed to Phoenix for the auction. It was REALLY cool. Practically a sensory overload on the cool cars. Not getting to go this year.
If you have the chance, by all means, GO!

I don't think I would ever buy anything there as it is just so overpriced. My friend has 3 cars there (one is a real pretty 62 chevy Impala that was raced since the day it was built). It's nice to look but I think if you buy something there it's either you are very rich or not to smart...or both.
I am building a new Mobil 1 quick lube /hand car wash and detail center here in Anthem, AZ so I will wait until money starts coming in before I expand my fleet.
It is so cool living in this state as it is a car guys dream state.

AZ is definately a place to find clean older cars. I have bought three from there so far.

Yep! That grabbed my attention as well........not a bad price considering it was a one-owner with 86,000 miles and had been a "daily-driver" since day-one..........

Mike,
I couldn't work out the time off work to go Thurs or Friday. I do not want to fight the crowds for Saturday. I am going to the Pavilions tomorrow (Sat). It will be NUTZ there. The gathering goes HOG WILD on the Barrett Jackson weekend. You going to the Pavilions?

I've never been, but have had friends go and watch it on Speed.
...Probably be worse than walking into a "Home Depot" of classic cars all w/ Saks 5th Ave prices...

It was a pretty sweet auction. Hard to believe 6 cars sold at $1,000,000+ today. Only one car sold that high last year and that was the concept Oldmobile.

Americas obsession with cars is amazing. But I'm certainly not one to blame anyone for that since I'm one of the many car nuts out there myself as many of you are too. I've never been to the B/J auctions. Too rich for my blood I guess. If I had to guess, I'd say that almost all the serious bid winners there are men. I'm not saying that there aren't women bidding on cars too, but I wonder what the percentage of male to female bidders are.
It's so cool when I meet a woman that's into muscle cars. It makes for that much more interesting conversation. But it isn't often when I meet women like that, and because the hobby of cars therefore is primarily a guy thing, that's what makes me suspect that it must be mostly men bidding on those high priced ones. I had to explain that so nobody thinks my comments are "sexist" and takes offense.
Anyway, Mike, let us know if you decided to take one of those home with you from the auction(the cars I mean :D ). And I wish you the best with that new biz. Sounds interesting. ;)

That's true, but one of the bidders that ran the GM Futureliner to 4.1million was a woman. There were a couple more ladies that bought fairly expensive cars. Earlier in the week there was a woman that sold an early model Mustang convertible, and another woman bought it. Not many, but they're out there and growing.

I was at the Pavilions yesterday... (Mall parking lot where they hold a car show every Saturday). The place was MOBBED ! Obviously by "car folks" from out of town, wearing their little badges around their necks (bidder badges from Barrett Jackson and there is another car auction going this same week). Was sort of amusing to watch them scurry around in a frenzy trying to be the first one to locate a "deal". The words from Boston's song "Rock and Roll Band" come to mind.... "He smoked big cigars, drove a Cadillac Car" I mean, I guess what was going on was real... but it seemed like so many "posers".
In any event, there was money flying, people crawling all over cars checking VINs and making hurried phone calls. An all original, never restored, painted etc. 1971 Ford Torino Cobra (429 Cobra Jet), 4spd, black sold for $40k. When I asked the guy selling why he sold it... he had his name on a wait list for the new Shelby Mustang Cobra.
One guy is walking through looking, while he is on the phone apparently talking to someone at the auction itself... having them bid. As he is strolling along he goes... Fifty Kay... Fifty two.... Ok go Fifty Five... etc.
But I will also tell you, most of these folks are car guys, but they don't have the "love" anymore. They are doing nothing more than prostituting the cars. They only see dollar signs, hear K-CHING when the engine starts, everything is a commodity. :shake: Works for them.... I hope I never become like that.

Where is "the Pavilions"? I am going to be in Phoenix for the month of March and would like to go there if there is a show every Saturday. Is it during the day or at night? I will be driving my Marauder there for the 3rd time. Its a long trip from New Jersey but is really easy in the Marauder. The X-M radio helps make the trip go faster.

It is located on the east side on the Indian Reservation at the junction of 101 and Indian Bend Rd.

They only see dollar signs, hear K-CHING when the engine starts, everything is a commodity. :shake: Works for them.... I hope I never become like that.I fully agree with you and I share your viewpoint, because I even have noticed that same thing amongst car sellers on e-bay too while exchanging messages and phone calls with them. Many of these guys are simply wheeling and dealing old muscle cars, and the only reason that they ever get excited is when they're making money. It's all about the money for them, and not much else.
They don't care how fast the car goes, how it handles, what the exhaust note sounds like or what the body style is like. All is they care about are things such as if it has an original engine that's also a big block, then it will bring more $$ at time of sale. They don't seem to have any genuine enthusiasm for the car itself, what it is, or how much of a piece of art the body style is as compared to new cars. As long as they can sell it for a quick turn around of decent cash, that's all that matters to them. They learn the car nut's jargon so that they can talk the talk only to make a good advertisement for the car(s) they want to sell. They're educated about the cars in question mostly so that they know what to look for when they're buying in hopes to get the "deal of the century" so that they can turn it around for a profit. I find it kinda disappoiting, but I guess that's capatilism at it's best, and I guess you can say that atleast it beats communism. But from a car enthusiast's point of view, it's a bit sad.
