View Full Version : Galena, IL Meet?

Is there any interest in a Galena IL meet? I think it's a pretty town and it is close to any people in Iowa that maybe want to meet up. Given the fact that downtown Galena will have no parking anywhere, we would have to come up with a place on the outskirts. There are beautiful roads to cruise on as well!!

That's a beautiful area to cruise. Especially in the fall.
Having been there in the past - I would meet in Mississippi Palisades Park in Savanna, Il, around 20 minutes SW of Galena. Then take river road up to East Dubuque for drinks and dinner. Or go the opposite direction from Savanna to Mt. Carroll, Il (county seat) . Mt Carroll has some real old classic taverns and atmosphere.
Watch out for deer.

We were in Galena a couple years ago for a Triumph Motorcycle RAT raid. We stayed at a beautiful place a couple miles south out of Galena, just over the River. The place looked right down in the river valley. It has school slopes for the winter and an Alpine Slide in the summer. Was a lot of fun.
Nice thing is the wives/SO can go in to town and shop. And, yes, there are some awesome roads in that area. Plus, it would give us another chance to hit Hawkeye Boats in Dubuque to check out the Baja Boats again. And this time bring the whole family.
I think it would be cool and it is just over a 3 hour drive for us - so not too bad.

Count me in! Why can't you get parking space and hotel rooms at new Hotel at the Ice Harbor in Dubuque next to the Casino? From there you can drive 20 minutes to Galina. And you can do a 45 minute run to Savanah and Palisades State Park if you want. Closest Drag strips are at Cordova (still open?) or in Earlville out Highway 20 west of Dubuque.

For us, I think it would work best to drive out Saturday morning. Spend the day hanging out in Galena, dinner, spend the night, breakfast the next day and drive back home. Or could do 2 nights and drive out after work on Friday, spend the night, all day Saturday there, then drive back on Sunday.

I've already decided around June or July I'll be spending a weekend out there. As for the meet, maybe a two day/one night would work out.
For anyone interested, visit http://www.galena.org/ you can find things to do, places to stay, etc.. I'm not sure what everyone wants to do, or where you guys want to stay and for how much, so let me know?
We could also hit Galena for awhile and take an hour cruise to visit the actual baseball diamond and field from Field of Dreams:

The more feedback the better, let it all out guys. Tell me what you want to do or how much you want to spend on lodging and lets get something figured out. If by chance I combine my own vacation into our meet, I'll probably be on the Harley.

depending on the date, I would like to make this meet as well. I spent many happy hours camping and fishing at the Palisades state park many moons ago.
July is the big meet at the drag strip near Chicago. June works for me.

I know it will start getting hotter by then, but I would say late July or early August. I am planning to go see Lidio like middle June and then we are planning a family trip to SD for the 4th of July week.

Proposed Date: Saturday June 3rd @ Lodging Choice through Sunday June 4th. Two nights are easily available if that decision is made.
Alright, for those interested, lets talk about lodging. If we can get this out of the way the rest will be a breeze.
You can have the choice of staying at the Best Western Quiet House (http://www.quiethouse.com/locations/galena/index.cfm). They seem to have very nice rooms, this is also my pick of the litter for my vacation since they have a sweet lookin "Hi-Tech" themed room that just tickles my geekdom. If you are looking for privacy, and well anything else the next option does not have. Rates around $170/per night on a weekend. It is sorta expensive, but there are PLENTY of places to stay in this town. Name your price, someone has a room for it.
What we can also do is rent out a cabin, for example: Click Here (http://www.almost-heaven-rentals.com/Galena-IL-hotel-cabin-home-rental-Natures-Nook.html). They can be from two-bedroom all the way to 5 bedroom/4.5 bathroom and a maximum occupancy of 10 on this model. On the plus slide, it will be cheaper to split this down the middle than it would be for everyone to get a hotel room if we can get atleast 5 people. I don't mind sleeping on the couch, or floor even. We could also hang out in the living room and shoot the ***** and whatnot. Screened porch, outside deck with grill, lower deck with hot tub if you bring the wifey, Sat Dish/TV/VCR/DVD and a kitchen. I don't know what to do with the kitchen, we can put things on the counter, and maybe food will happen or something. Seeing some nice Marauders out in the country will make for some sweet pictures, especially all parked in front of a nice place like that. Another nice home is http://www.cogansvalleyridge.com/

http://www.almost-heaven-rentals.com//images/Natures-Nook/Natures-Nook-Gameroom.jpg
For around $100 a night, this looks like a sweet deal ^^^^
EDIT: Loghome requres 2 night minimum!!!
If we vouch for hotel rooms, we can designate a time for breakfast, and just check out the town on our own and meet back the steak house for dinner, or we can do lunch too. I'd imagine we would seperate and pick everyone up as we walked around. Before dinner we could cruise around. Or after too, I love cruising at night with the windows down.
If we vouch for a rental home, we can cook up breakfast and gather at the table. Hop in the Marauders and hit downtown. We'll probably need to convoy in a few since parking downtown is scarce, even so we can just scope it out and park futher away if its too clustered. Check out the land, meet for lunch, head back to the home and get everyone's MM and cruise 60 minutes to the Field of Dreams movie site, check that out, snap some pictures, head back, relax, hit dinner. At sunrise we pack and move out.

I say we let Jason put the house in his name and then we just crash his party! haha. Just kidding.
I've driven through Galena dozens of times and never really stopped to look around (read: walk instead of drive) I really should do that more often, especially since it's in my back yard.
I'll be there with the rest of you. We can take a cruise up the river to Prairie du Chien and hit the riverboat too.
This trip is really a fall leaves changing color trip though...
Just FYI.
John
Just thought of something.....
Assuming Barry is gonna have another bash in the backyard, this Galena Meet would fall a week after.
Too close together for me.

I'm glad we're getting somewhere :P Throw up a date, I have no problem putting the house in my name as long as you guys pay your cut. Also, one night? two? the loghome requires two nights to book. Now it would be sweet, but some people may not want to be gone that long or may not want to drive up after work on Friday. I'm for anything, which is why that makes it hard for me to arrange the right plan without a lot of feedback.

Yeah - I'd be up for that. There are a lot of twisties out there that I recall, and I haven't been there since '00. Also some good B&B's if you are planning on spending a weekend.
Heck - we could even go to Dubuque. It'd make us glad we live anywhere else!

It would be the 2 of us for 1 night (Saturday night) as of now. Not sure we can get someone to watch the kid's both nights. Although, if we could, I would rather drive out Friday night, have all day Saturday and Sunday morning, and then drive back on Sunday.

I agree. If they would give a group rate for like 2 nights, then we would make 2 nights work instead. Rooms look pretty nice. I am sure we could live with just a regular King room. Don't need a suite or anything. Especially if most of the time is spent outside the room anyway.
As for date, I would throw out an early June date for us. Weather should be decent, we are already planning a 4th of July trip and August could start getting pretty hot. Just my $.02. Maybe like June 2-4 or June 9-11?
Rider90

Irish Cottage said $139/night for 5 deluxe king rooms. No group discount for five rooms/2 people each. The rate given was for Friday night, June 9th, and Saturday night the 10th. Includes high speed internet and some really good breakfast she liked to keep talking about...
I'm gung ho for the cabin, can't beat the parking and scenery for near $100/night if atleast 5 people pitch in.

Eric and his wife get dibs on da hot tub, the rest can alternate off the fireplace if we eat beans for dinner, we can cook brats and burgers too...
Also, the weekend proposed is June 9th and June 10th. That is 4 days before the peak rates kick in and spike up $125/night.

OK, I have asked for Friday, June 9th off from work. I will spend that day getting the car ready, dropping the baby off with Grandma, picking the wife up and getting on the road to Galena. We are up for the 2 night stay and that weekend works well for us. The following weekend will be the baby's 1-year birthday!!!!
Also, I am hoping there are some supercharged (preferably Trilogy) cars there so the wife can get a ride in one (well, me too) so I can convince her why I "need" the supercharger!!!

OK, looking at the calendar, the weekend before might work for us. It will kind of depend on the new babysitter for the baby that we have to go with. But the weekend of June 3rd-5th would be another option and that would leave the following weekend open for those going to the other get together. I know it is a few months away, but need to get something lined up to make plans with work and for someone to watch the kids.
