Howdy -
Just a lark, but the wifey and I are planning a trip to Vegas (well, *I'm* planning a trip for us to Vegas) where we want to see a show or two, eat expensively, hit a spa, and other quiet, relaxing stuff.
Could those who have been there or live there give me some ideas on things I must see?
We're geeks, so the Star Trek experience is already on the list. Gambling and brothels are most likely not.
Damm|t.
Thanks,
-A
(btw I see flights going from Minneapolis to ATLANTA to LV, so we might be seeing the entire USofA in this venture)
And no, I don't want to drive 3200 miles, even in my Marauder. that would suck up too much time.

If I ever go to Vegas, I would like to see a Blue Man Group Show.

Weird. I just put that one down before I saw your post. The Amazing Johnathan (comedian/magician) is there, also. Gotta see him.

make sure you get by and see the fountains at the belagio, also go inside and see the garden, definetly worth it. Walking the strip is fun at night also. Check out the animal exibit at the mirage too if you have time

Might be cool to go in and shop at the Venetian (?). Don't have to gamble there, but it sure looks nice on tv :)

Blue Man Group - I don't like Vegas shows but this was an AMAZING experience!!!!!!! Please Andrew- if you don't go to BMG- you'll regret it forever. You're the world's coolest Band Director and they make very interesting sounds- a match made in heaven.
Oh, the Imperial Palace Car Museum is pretty cool too.

I read the best restaurants are there (at the Venetian). We will be eating there at least one night, so shopping there should be easy to work out. :)

The Star Trek ride is pretty good, have a bite to eat in their restaurant.
I was eating there one time, looked to my left and there was a very menacing 7 foot tall Klingon staring at me from inches away.
I nearly jumped out of my skin, much to the delight of my customers I was with!
I don't gamble either, but it's fascinating to people watch in the casinos, a lot are connected together so it's a fun walk after dinner.

Things you need to do:
1. Go ride the coaster at the top of the Stratosphere. Outstanding!
2. Go down to old downtown and see the light show over the walking mall. Take a camera to this too. very cool.
3. Ride the gondolas at the Venetian. Also very cool since you're with your wife!
4. Go to the dinner theater at the Excalibur. You get to eat with your fingers and the show is really good too!
5. The Hard Rock casino has the Tres Cool pool. Go there during the days and see all the movie stars and hotties. (and get me a shot glass for my collection!)
Most money won on slots:
1. Mirage, $3500+ (two days)
2. Slots--o-Fun (next to Circus Circus) $1800+
3. Excalibur $1500+ (had to get up to go to dinner show)
I'm sure others are good too, but these are memorable.
Cheers!

I have been to Vegas about 20 times so far (I just got married there last summer) and can answer most of your questions.
Recomendations...
Stay at the MGM (BIG!!!)
Star Trek (did it about 15 times, now expanded to 2 attractions-FANTASTIC!)
Amazing Johnathon...VERY FUNNY!
Go to Circus Circus ONLY to eat at their steakhouse, otherwise stay clear of that piece of S!$# place...but DO eat at their steakhouse.
Get a car and cruise out to Hoover Dam (bring camera!)
Walk the strip at night, when you get far down the strip and very tired take a jitney or bus back to you hotel.
I could go on and on but Vegas is sooo much fun you will have a blast.

I saw him in Vegas a couple years ago. Although its the same skit you seen on TV, its still hilarious. I also have an autographed copy of his book :D

I saw him when he was in Davie. Great show. There may be other comics/shows out there that might interst you, too. When I was out there in 2003, I saw Ron Lucas at the Rio. He had a few guest stints on Night Court. I also saw Wendy Liebman at the Improv at Harrah's.
As for roller coasters, the Manhattan Express at New York New York is fun (and somewhat scary)* ride. There may be discount ride coupons available for this.
*There was one part on the ride that stood out as being scary. When you see it, you will agree with me which part it is. <---This is coming from a rider who is used to riding coasters that go into a ravine.

Vegas is great.
1. Best Prime Rib - Sir Galahads at Excalibur - great price too.
2. Best shows - Any Cirque Du Solei except the adult themed one (A lot of
Homosexual conotations)
Celine Dion
3. Best Blackjack gambling - Casino Royale - try the "switch blackjack"
4. Best view day/night - Top of the Stratosphere - great rides too.
Best Advice: If you want to see a show buy the tickets online ASAP. They
sell very fast.
Have Fun!

The roller coaster on top of the Stratosphere has been closed down. AFter ten years they are taking it down to install some other ride. There are still three rides on top of the tower, and the view from the observation deck is still there.

If you did half of what was mentioned here you will have an awesome time. If there is a show you definately want to see, check now to make sure tickets are available during your stay. If you have a flexible schedule, there are discount ticket booths on the strip. What they do is get all the unsold tickets each night and try to fire sale them off. You can usually get a 2 for 1 deal but you have to get the tickets, and rush over to the show. Don't buy any tickets (or watches, etc) from anyone off the sidewalk. The tickets are forgeries and the watches are fake. Having worked as a valet parking attendant years ago, I can tell you all the real rolex watches, diamond jewelry, etc were bought by us long before the mark makes it to the sidewalk. One of my former co-workers used to have a jewelers loop in the key office (a true vegas myth). Those sidewalk guys are just hustlers......Otherwise, Enjoy!

My wife, sister and mother are there right now (I got left at home with the kids) for a long weekend.
I should have some ideas for you on Monday.
They have called and said they have been amazed how many things there are to do without spending huge amounts of money.

Live in Vegas, so take it for what it's worth;
Blue Man Group is far and away the best show I've ever seen here.
Did not care for Amazing Jonathon. Segfreid & Roy (obviously gone) was a complete bore. Penn & Teller stunk (short stints on Leno are fine, a two hour show gets boring), O was too long........
If you rent a car, Hoover Dam and the tour is INCREDIBLE!!
Try your hardest to see Valley Of Fire state park.....STUNNING..
or at the very least Red Rock Canyon.
Valley Of Fire is about an hour North on 15. Redrock is about a 1/2 hour West of town.
The defunct roller coaster on Stratosphere was garbage....main reason it's gone. You HAVE to ride the Big Shot, Insanity and Xscream at the 'Sphere, guaranteed sphincter pucker rides!!! $30 for an unlimited ride pass.....worth it!!!
While the high end restaraunts are good........I HIGHLY recommend a joint about 15 minutes north off the strip........EXCELLENT food and far better personal service than the busy strip joints;
Marc's on Lake Mead and Tenaya......I promise you won't be dissapointed.
Have a great trip!!

Yes, or just ask the cabbie to take you to the "old strip", 4 Queens etc.. You'll get there!
Cheers!
