View Full Version : Poll: What's in your PCM?

I'm interested in knowing the breakdown of EEC codes on this site.

(they are easy to see... the tear tag is located on the windshield pillar near the front fender, visible when you open the driver's side front door, on a small white square sticker with a bar code and 4 alphanumeric characters)

I'm hoping to be able to set up this poll to accept multiple answers, for the benefit of those owning multiple Marauders. For those who have sold or traded, please stick to what you currently own.

Edit: yes, multiple answers are possible. I've answered using CRD0 and CRD1 for both my cars and it accepted it!

I believe all 04's are MAV2.

Hey Mark .... they added your code to the list of choices. Now Defyant, Haggis, and CheeseheadBob have to vote again, too !!!

Hope I'm not re-plowing the same field, but didn't see any answers regarding the question on differences in factory programming codes. I have an '04 with the MAV2 code. What does this mean, and how does it differ from the other codes listed?

I have read a lot of threads regarding transmission "gear hunting" and other issues. My '04, which I belive is factory stock except for the changes I have initiated, displays none of the bad behaviors mentioned on numerous posts here. The shifts are firm and commited at part throttle and "Oh My God" firm with a heavier foot. At WOT the car almost always "barks" second and if in slippery conditions will get sideways. Lots of fun. Yes there is a question here -- I am considering purchasing a tuner and flashing a new tune on my computer. But given what I already have, will I notice a difference? Thanks to any offering advice / opinions.

There is a square white sticker on the front of the driver side door jamb. From what I have read in other posts, apparently all '04 have the MAV2 code. Can anyone confirm this, and what does this mean, especially as pertains to performance advantages of purchasing a tuner and manipulating the PCM?

You answered your own question about the factory programing for the tranny. It also manages dual nock sensors that came on 04's. I am sure there is more that I don't know about. The tranny can be "tweaked" and made even better through a tune. I picked up 30hp and 50# torque in the midrange with a dyno tune over my base MAV2 computer program.

Thanks RayJay. I looked at your mods list and I intend to add the PHP spacer and a full Kooks header / dual system (although I'm thinking of having an H pipe rather than X as I understand the torque is greater with an H pipe and I am seeking a deep rumble rather that the "rasp" I have heard mentioned with the X pipe. So a tweaked tune (after the mods) should show an improvement.

I see you had a dyno tune - I am contemplating purchasing and Xcal2 unit. Is it worth it?

Being in FL make a trip to see the man, DR, he'll fix you up the right way.

so. . .what is the difference in the codes exactly? Exactly?

It's not easy to track the differences, nor explain them here. We do know that the shift schedule for the tranny was changed in '04, and there were some other issues like the cooling fan coming on late, stuff like that. But and honestly, trying to track and explain all of the changes, is like explaining the difference between Windows 98 and Windows XP.

If ever you get a chance to peek at the software, it would look like a directory tree of your hard drive, with hundreds of sub-directories and files. It would take you a year to check each parameter for change.

Mac summed it up very well. I saw the directory when I had my car tuned and was amazed at all the parameters available to be tweaked.

I am an FDH2. Does anyone have a list of what the differences are? Why so many different ones?

From what I've gather reading the 03 MM has a 4R70W tranny where as the 04 MM has a 4R75W tranny. Is this correct and is the difference only the amount of torque it can hold?

Is this correct and is the difference only the amount of torque it can hold? You are correct, and your suggestion of enduring higher torque is part of the answer. The chief differences inside the 75 tranny seem to be in valve body function and stub shaft quality, as well as an improved torque converter.

The way I heard it, Ford's motivation for change came late in the game. The 4R70W as it was installed in the '03 300A Marauder, was not upgraded from previous applications, i.e. CV/PI, GMs and Taxi, all of which have 2V SOHC engines and produce considerably less brake HP and torque than the Marauder's stock 302/318. Tranny failure among the '03 300A MMs woke them up.

I am an FDH2. Does anyone have a list of what the differences are? Why so many different ones? FDH2 is the oldest catch code on the street today. Again, tracking every change seems an impossible task, something as simple as having the radiator fan turn on at 190 d. rather than 198, could cause a catch code change.

I know for sure some of the changes were shift schedules, torque converter lock-up and corrections to the PATS. However, if you have any aftermarket tuning in place via flash over, the differences can't be tracked.

BTW, I don't know of anyone who has compiled, or even tried to compile, a list of changes. Now that there are several catch codes to pick from, I think I'd rather check into a monastery somewhere, and translate a Bible or two first.
