My one mile trek down Vincennes Avenue to Saint Mary of Scotland grammar school, was dial-up back in 1963.
I drive the same Vincennes route to get to my work today.
The difference is all motor...

It's what you're relegated to use when you live in Timbuk3 that isn't serviced by cable or DSL, and you don't think satellite is worth it (both in start-up and ongoing co$t).
*Best option available was one of those ISPs that offer the HiSpeed Accelerator.
Oh wHell .... wah, wah, wah. :depress:

jgc61sr2002 - Cable is the fastest IMO.
Not arguing your O, but back in NC I was connected with BellSouth's FastAccess DSL and was able to beat the speed (measured using the same internet speed barometer facility ... and network hops were about the same as per TRACERT) of a MI bud' having ComCast.
*Caveat: Your mileage may vary.
Opinion: I'm not a fan of cable because if the only service that you get is internet, you're going to pay premium $$$$$ -and- as far as TV access goes, in most cases you pay less and get more with dish. That and I'm tired of the cable provider jacking the prices every time you turn around.
*Ya, Ya I know they still haven't perfected that dish technology to prevent signal fade during inclement weather situations. :D

That's true. Cable is priced higher and the jack up the price a few dollars at a time. They probably think you won't notice.

This is true. Before that, apparently it was a real b*tch to download porn via smoke signals or carrier pigeons.
Our family gave up dial-up internet service around the same time we upgraded our knock sensor to a fully-electric doorbell.
