I've recently re-discovered Steely Dan when I picked up ] A Decade of Steely Dan (http://www.windowsmedia.com/MediaGuide/Templates/AlbumInfo.aspx?a_id=R%20%20%20 %2018970[URL=) out of the discount rack at Tower records. I can not get enough. Good stuff!
I'd like to pick up some more of their work. Can anyone recomend some good albums (um, CDs. Showin my age there)?

I have the box set, Citizen Steely Dan (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000002ORE/sr=1-8/qid=1139436072/ref=pd_bbs_8/104-3981154-9323912?%5Fencoding=UTF8) and I think it's a bargain. It has all of their studio releases and Amazon has it for just over $50. It's worth it.

"Can't buy a thrill" is a great album!! It's all early stuff but shows how creative they were.

You might also want to check Donald Fagin's Nightfly. It was his first solo effort after Steely Dan broke up and it has some great songs.

We found a road sign for Muswellbrook when travelling in New South Wales, north of Sydney in OZ in 1994!

The song "Black Friday" (1975) contains one of their most fascinating 'namechecks', a surprising reference to the town of Muswellbrook (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muswellbrook) in northern New South Wales (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_South_Wales), Australia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia):

When Black Friday comes,
I'll fly down to Muswellbrook.

This reference has startled and amused many Australian fans, but is believed that Becker and Fagen in fact selected the name from an atlas, primarily because it worked effectively with the next rhyme:

I'm gonna strike all the big red words
From my little black book.

and also because it allowed them to create the amusing couplets in the next stanza:

I'm gonna do just what I please.
Gonna wear no socks and shoes,
With nothin' to do
But feed all the kangaroos.

It is typical of their wry sense of humour that the reference to kangaroos makes no particular sense unless one knows that Muswellbrook is located in Australia.

Mary knows All :bows:
just one of my many Steely Dan favorites. . .
THE ROYAL SCAM
And they wandered in
From the city of St. John
Without a dime
Wearing coats that shined
Both red and green
Colors from their sunny island
From their boats of iron
They looked upon the promised land
Where surely life was sweet
On the rising tide
To New York City
Did they ride into the street
See the glory
Of the royal scam
They are hounded down
To the bottom of a bad town
Amid the ruins
Where they learn to fear
An angry race of fallen kings
Their dark companions
While the memory of
Their southern sky was clouded by
A savage winter
Every patron saint
Hung on the wall, shared the room
With twenty sinners
See the glory
Of the royal scam
By the blackened wall
He does it all
He thinks he's died and gone to heaven
Now the tale is told
By the old man back home
He reads the letter
How they are paid in gold
Just to babble in the back room
All night and waste their time
And they wandered in
From the city of St. John without a dime See the glory
Of the royal scam

You may want to check out the group on DVD.
As much as I like their music, I've just become a big Dire Straits fan. Their DVD (and CD) "Dire Straits-On The Night" is fantastic, except for one thing-the DVD/CD doesn't have "Sultans of Swing".

One of my favorite Steely Dan tunes is on the "FM" soundtrack, the title tune called "FM" (No Static At All)...
"Bury the bottle, mama, it's grapefruit wine...
Kick off your high-heeled sneakers, it's party time...
The girls don't seem to care, what's on,
as long as they play 'til dawn....
Nothing but Blues, and Elvis, and
Somebody else's favorite song...":beatnik:
