Any Prince fans out there?
not sure if anyone here watched SNL on 2/4/06 but Prince was on with
Steve Martin as host. I thought the show was good but a lot of others
said differently, maybe I'm just stupid and stuck in the 80's
anyway here's a link to Prince doing "Fury" from his upcoming
release 3121. Probably something that should have been done around
the mid 80's, but hey I liked it. . .catch it here. . .

I've never been a groupie of any particular band or artist... if they made something I liked, I bought it, if they didn't then I didn't. I thought Prince's early stuff was original and I was always impressed by the fact he wrote and performed all his tunes, and when I say performed, I mean he played all instruments or almost all (something that's inspired me: as I sit here typing, I am surrounded by 6 electric guitars, 1 acoustic guitar, 5 electric basses, and two keyboards... all I'm missing is a drum kit).
Sometime in the late 80s or early 90s, I lost track of him, no doubt as he struggled to free himself from a company that was probably more intent on spitting out quickie hits rather than give him artistic liberty. I have no idea if I would have liked his original stuff at that point in his life, but I appreciate the yearning for that liberty.
Fast forward to last Spring after the second practice with an 70s/80s metal tribute band I decided to dabble in... as we stood outside the studio discussing our session before leaving, we came to lament the lack of virtuoso guitar playing that is evident in today's music. There are no guitar heroes to inspire the next generation of breath-taking lead guitar playing. Grunge seemed to have killed it sometime in the early 90s, and I haven't seen any return of that element in pop music. Maybe in 10 years when 80s metal and good old hard rock will become the rage that disco is today (and shows like That 80s Show won't get cancelled after 20 minutes)... maybe.
Fast forward once again to that Saturday night as I watched SNL: I wasn't too hot on watching Prince but that lead guitar playing blew my mind with its fluidity! Monday morning, my lead guitarist and I were e-mailing each other about it. We were hoping that would be the inspiration for a new generation... if so, maybe there is hope after all...

I grew up in the Twin Cities in the 70s when Prince was making his name there. Personally, I never got into his music, but I did enjoy some of his early production actions with The Time (Flyte Time). Still laugh every time I hear "What Time Is IT??"

I'm a huge fan of both Prince and Frank Zappa. Between the two theres a load of original guitar work. Sure beats the hell outta this sound alike/look alike garbage out there today.

Although I am not hot on the whole androgynous thing, he is a great entertainer that knows how to deliver both the visual and sound.
Watching that clip yesterday, I spotted an example of this: at one point during one of his many solos, he ceases to pick with his right hand while his left hand continues to finger the lead (can you say mega-compression on his line?) and as he's intently watching his left fingers bounce around on the fretboard, he calmly reaches up with his right hand and brushes his upper lip once (it gets pretty hot under spotlights on a stage, trust me). Never skipped a beat. All this in a space of a second. Gives you the impression the guy could walk over and pick up a beverage with one hand, open it and down it, then walk back to center stage, all the while continuing the lead with his OTHER hand without missing a beat.
That's what's missing nowadays: grand-standing. It's entertaining, it oozes coolness and self-confidence, and for those of us looking at the technical details, makes us go "oh my freaking G-O-D, that's awesome!!!". These guys are getting paid a fortune to entertain us, so... entertain us, dammit! Work for that money, beeyotch!
The current scene is so inundated with self-deprecating "Oh, I don't give a ***** about the industry, f*** 'em all" and "I'm an angry young man/woman/animal/etc. so I'm just here to bang chords and yell at my parents".
