"(03/03/06 -- DURHAM) - A N.C. Highway Patrol trooper was seriously injured Friday morning after a high-speed chase through east Durham. Trooper Jerry Brand, 40, crashed on Angier Avenue at Tyonek Drive. Witnesses say the Brand's cruiser apparently lost control, struck a tree and a power pole, then landed in a yard on Angier Avenue. Brand was rushed to Duke University Hospital where he was in stable condition Friday evening after hours of surgery. Highway Patrol officials say Brand's injuries are not life-threatening.
Troopers say the chase began when the green Honda sped away during a license check on Pettigrew Street in Durham, a Highway Patrol spokeswoman said. Officials said speeds reached 55 mph before the trooper crashed, but a witness estimated the car was going around 90 mph. Police say the suspect got away, but authorities located what they believe to be the suspect's car at an apartment complex off Foxridge Road in Durham. Troopers are asking anyone with information about the crash or a possible suspect to contact the Highway Patrol. Images from Chopper 11 showed the front of the trooper's cruiser was missing. What appeared to be the engine of the car sat in the middle of the road, several feet away from the car. Brand has been with the Highway Patrol since 1989. He patrols Durham and Granville counties."

Looking at the pics this LEO was very very lucky. They say the engine, on fire, went across the road after being seperating from the frame.

Just goes to show how much punishment the panther platform can take and still protect it's occupants......

Sorry I couldn't attach any pics to this post, will try them in a seperate post.

Very lucky Trooper...Thank gawd he was in a Panther platform ! As for the witness of 90mph speeds, only the accident investigators wil determine that by collecting on scene data and crunching numbers. It has been my experience that a witness will judge 55 miles per hour as much faster..unless they have a radar gun stuck in their azzp...
